The Open Payment Toll Collection System (SPT) which allows highway users to pay for tolls using debit and credit cards has officially been implemented on 11 highways. This system goes into effect on 20 September 2023. This news comes after the extensive testing that took place over the past month.
The highways involved include:
- Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway (Akleh)
- The Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)
- The Sungai Besi Expressway (Besraya)
- The New Pantai Expressway (NPE)
- Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE)
- the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP)
- Skim Penyuraian Trafik Kuala Lumpur Barat (SPRINT)
- Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas)
- SMART Tunnel
- Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX)
- Duta-Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE)
12 highways agreed to implement; Penang Bridge to implement year end
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi had mentioned that the implementation of the SPT would provide new alternatives to existing toll payment methods.
“Our objective is to provide payment options for users since previously there were only one or two systems; sometimes their (Touch’N Go) card(s) balance is not sufficient (for toll payment). Road users now have another option, namely the SPT, this is also the first step towards implementing the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system in the future,” said Datuk Alexander after officiating the Implementation of the SPT at the Loke Yew Toll Plaza on Besraya, Bernama reports.
He also mentioned that thus far, a total of 12 highways have agreed to implement the SPT. However, the 12th highway, that being the Penang Bridge (JPP), will delay implementation in order to allow the concessionaire to conduct further study on it. As such, the JPP will only begin SPT service at the end of this year.
Steps to ensure successful open payment system usage
The Works Ministry had also released a user guide for those planning to use the open payment system:
- Activite contactless payment on your credit/debit card
- Use the correct toll lane with the MyDebit, Visa or Mastercard logo
- Ensure there is enough credit or funds available for debiting before paying the toll
- If the transaction can’t go through, to try using Touch ‘n Go or another available card
- Scan the card at the correct open payment system terminal
In the meantime, there will be ongoing discussions on expanding the implementation of the SPT system to other highways throughout the country.
The implementation of the SPT system is part of the MYjalan campaign initiative undertaken by the Works Ministry, the Malaysian Highway Authority and highway concession companies to provide a greater level of convenience to road users.
