Phone launch season: the trade-in number versus the resale number
Every launch season the same offer appears: hand in your current phone, take a fixed amount off the new one. It is a good product. It is also priced for what it delivers, and what it delivers is certainty, not value.

Two different products
A trade-in converts your old phone into a credit instantly. You hand it over, the value comes off today’s bill, and you walk out with the new one. The price is set to leave the retailer margin for refurbishment and resale, so it is always below what a buyer would pay.
A private sale gets you closer to what the phone is worth to a buyer. But you carry the listing, the messages, the meet-up, the haggling and the chance that it falls through. The trade-in figure is lower because it has to be. You are paying a fee for not dealing with a stranger.

How wide the gap actually is
The numbers are public. Apple Malaysia’s own trade-in credit runs from RM1,000 to RM4,400 towards a new iPhone 17 for an iPhone 13 or newer, with the exact figure set by model and condition. Carousell’s instant-sell service quoted up to RM3,010 for an iPhone 15 Pro Max, RM2,650 for a 15 Pro and RM1,960 for a standard iPhone 15 as at 22 August 2026. Private listings on the same marketplace typically clear 15 to 20 percent above an instant quote, which on a two-year-old flagship is several hundred ringgit. Authorised resellers such as Machines and Switch add overtrade bonuses of up to RM300 during launch weeks, usually on the condition that the credit is spent on the same receipt.
Condition grading is where trade-ins quietly lose value. A hairline scratch that a private buyer would ignore can drop a grade and a hundred ringgit. Battery health, original box and accessories, and whether the phone is carrier-locked all move the number. Before requesting a quote, know which grade your phone really sits in.
When the convenience is worth paying for
If the trade-in is bundled with a launch-period discount or a zero-interest instalment plan that you would not otherwise qualify for, the bundle can beat the private sale even after the gap. Run the comparison on the total: new phone price minus trade-in credit minus any bundled discount, against new phone price minus what you would realistically get privately, minus the value of your time.
If it is a plain trade-in with no bundle, you are simply paying the convenience fee. It is reasonable to decide you would rather have the afternoon. It is also reasonable to decide the fee is worth it. What is not reasonable is not knowing the number.

The private sale, done properly
If you go the private route: photograph every side of the phone, state the battery health and any marks, price it against completed listings rather than asking prices, meet in a public place, and accept payment only in a form that cannot be reversed. A sale that falls through costs you more than the trade-in gap would have.
The third option people forget
Keeping the old phone as a spare has a value too, particularly if anyone in the household is due a replacement in the next year. Against that, a phone loses resale value every month it sits in a drawer. If you will not use it, sell it now.
