5 Things You Can Do To Make Extra Cash In 2023

part time jobs to earn more

Life is tough, and it’s even tougher when inflation is eating into your hard earned income.

No matter how wisely you manage your money, there will come a time when you have overspent because you splurged during the recent festive season. You realise you’re only halfway through the month and already on the verge of being broke.

If you think you’re back up against a wall this month, think again. There are so many weird, bizarre ideas available on the Internet to make some extra cash.

One of the easiest way to make some extra cash is by taking advantage of the C2C (consumer to consumer) wave that’s dominating this generation and probably the generations to come.

It provides a platform that makes it easier for buyers and sellers to locate each other. Sellers don’t necessarily have to sell a product, you can also rent something or provide your unique services and skills. Think Grab, Carousell, Mudah.my, and more.

Here are a few ways you can make some quick cash to stretch out your bank account:

 1. Teach a skill

There are over 7 billion people on this planet, and everyone is good at something. Did you learn Spanish back in university? Then teach some basic Spanish and get paid for it.

Are you good at playing the guitar, piano, or simply good at singing? Head over to the nearest music studio and see if they are looking for a music or vocal teacher. Maybe you’re just really good at Math or English? Tuition teachers are in high demand and get paid handsomely in Malaysia.

All you have to do is allocate a few hours over the weekends, and you can make some extra cash while putting your talent and skills to good use. So even if you charge RM70 per hour, you’re already making RM140 in just a couple of hours. That means at least four hours over the weekend will easily rake in RM280 for you, and that’s an extra RM1,120 in a month!

You can list your services on sites like Servis Hero, Kaodim, Recommend, and more.

 2. Proofread

If you speak and write English well, you’re in luck. A lot of university students are constantly searching for proofreaders to read and edit their work. The payment rate depends on your level of experience. But once you do a good job, your customer will be happy to recommend you to all their classmates and friends – and thus building a customer base for you. Really, all you’re doing here is reading and fixing typos and you’re getting paid to do it.

In Malaysia, proofreading rates can range anywhere from RM2 to RM20 per page; depending the technical difficulty of the writing. It is also possible to charge according to wordcount, with rates going around RM0.20 per word for basic editing and proofreading.

If you’re multilingual, you could also try your hand at translation projects for about the same rates.

 3. Join GoGet and run errands

Are you reading through point 1 and 2 thinking “I have no skills or talent so this article probably doesn’t apply to me”? Hold it right there. First of all, we beg to differ because you must have some hidden talent and probably just don’t know what it is yet. Second of all, there are still ways for you to earn some quick cash.

Do you have a car or a bike? Got easy access to the train station? Join GoGet! GoGet is a service platform that provides deliveries, dispatch, manual labour, and more.

All you have to do is run errands for people who have no time or transport; it can be buying groceries, making a run down to PosLaju, delivering lunch to kids on behalf of busy parents, or perhaps just sending a love letter – and you’ll get paid to do it. Apart from running errands, you can also help people to pack up or organise their things when they are moving – the possibilities are endless!

 4. Sell your clothes and other used items

Don’t own a car? Still not a problem. Just channel your inner Eminem and start cleaning out your closet. Pick out items that you haven’t worn in a year or so (we’re sure there’s plenty) and list them on apps like Carousell, Duriana, Lelong and more. Even if you charge RM10 per piece of clothing, it’s RM100 for 10 pieces!

This is not only limited to clothes. Maybe you have on old phone lying around. Is there a bookshelf or an extra mattress you’re not using anymore? Perhaps you have a collection of figurines that are worth a lot of money or a signed football jersey (although you really should be keeping that one).

Get creative and rummage your house – and list your items on sites like Facebook Marketplace, Lowyat forum, eBay, and more.

5. Rent out stuff that other people need

There’ a whole range of other things you can rent out as well. For example, patio furniture, power tools, gardening equipment, barbeque sets, tents, decorative lights and so on.

You may use similar listing sites from point number four for these items too, or simply post on Facebook and spread the word!

With any of these ideas, make sure you know what you’re getting into before you list your skills, your possessions, or offer to run errands. Some can be time consuming, you don’t want to be too maxed out trying to make more money. Some are risky, so read all the fine print, know your market, do your research, and pick the best available option for you.
