Summary

One page, two of you: the parent saving for a child's education, and the graduate trying to clear the loan without drama. Both sides, honest numbers.

For parents: what SSPN actually pays

Simpan SSPN’s declared dividends over recent years (PTPTN announcements):

Year Dividend
2018 4.00%
2019 4.00%
2020 4.00%
2021 3.00%
2022 3.05%
2023 3.60%
2024 4.05%, highest in 10 years (RM439.87m to 6.77m accounts; MOHE/PTPTN, Apr 2025)

The 2025 dividend follows PTPTN’s usual April–June announcement cycle, check ptptn.gov.my for the declared rate. For context, EPF declared 6.15% for 2025 (KWSP, 28 Feb 2026), a different risk profile, but a useful benchmark when weighing where education savings sit.

On rate alone, SSPN sits in fixed-deposit territory. But the rate isn’t the point, the package is:

  • Tax relief up to RM8,000 a year on net deposits. For someone in the 19% bracket, maxing it is worth up to ~RM1,520 off your tax bill, effectively a bonus return no FD offers.
  • Matching grant up to RM10,000 for eligible lower-income families, takaful coverage, and government backing.

Worked example (illustrative): deposit RM8,000 in a year at a 3.6% dividend = RM288. Add a RM1,520 tax saving at the 19% bracket and your effective first-year return is over 22% on that deposit. The relief is the engine; the dividend is the passenger. Compare fixed deposit interest rates conveniently with iMoney.

For graduates: clearing PTPTN without the drama

How repayment works: repayment starts 12 months after graduation, most smoothly via scheduled salary deduction, set it up once and it stops being a monthly decision.

Discounts: settlement discounts are Budget-cycle campaigns, not standing offers, Budget 2022 gave 15% off full settlement with 10–12% tiers; Budget 2023 offered up to 20% plus deferments for incomes under RM1,800; campaigns open and close within months. The reliable habit: before making any lump-sum settlement, check the announcements page at ptptn.gov.my for a live discount first, settling a week before a campaign starts is the expensive kind of diligent.

The travel-list problem: defaulters can be barred from leaving the country under immigration blacklisting. If travel plans reveal you’re listed: settle or restructure with PTPTN, get clearance confirmation, and allow processing days before your flight, don’t discover this at the airport. (Our full travel-ban guide covers the checking steps.)

Falling behind? Restructure before you default

PTPTN offers rescheduling, extended tenure, lower monthly amounts, and engaging them before missed payments pile up keeps you off the blacklist entirely. The worst plan is silence; the loan doesn’t forget, and neither does the exit gate at KLIA. Visit our tax articles hub for more relevant information.

THE MOVE
parents, if you’ll owe tax this year and have education savings anyway, moving them into SSPN before 31 December converts ordinary savings into a tax-relieved deposit. Graduates, one WhatsApp to HR to set up salary deduction beats twelve months of remembering.
