From next month onwards, the Social Security Organisation (Socso) will increase the minimum salary for eligibility to RM4,000 a month, from RM3,000 previously.

All Malaysian employees who are earning up to RM4,000 in gross monthly salary will be eligible for Socso coverage beginning in June 2016, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem.

This ruling is expected to benefit 500,000 workers who were previously not covered under the Employees Social Security Amendment Act (Act 4) approved by Parliament recently, said Riot.

He added that the scheme will be effective from June 1, after the amendments to the Act are gazetted.

“Previously, only employees earning a monthly salary of not more than RM3,000 were eligible for coverage, and Socso expects 6.5 million workers in the country to benefit from the scheme,” he said.
