Wedding costs 2026: what couples actually paid, by component

Couple planning budget together with text: Wedding 2026: where the money actually goes.
Summary

The venue is not where weddings go over budget. The lines that overrun are the ones priced per item, photography, attire, the gifting, because each one expands quietly and nobody is watching the total. Here is the cost by component, with the range at each, and the three decisions that move it most.

The shape of a Malaysian wedding budget

Every figure below is a range from published surveys and 2026 planning guides, not a single number. Weddings vary by community, by city and by ambition more than almost any other purchase, and a single average would be false precision. The Iluma Malaysia Wedding Cost Survey 2024 put the median Malaysian wedding at RM60,000 to RM80,000; 2026 guides place a Malay wedding at RM30,000 to RM80,000 and a Chinese banquet wedding at RM50,000 to RM120,000, with catering taking 35 to 50 percent of the total.

Component Typical range (illustrative) What drives it
Venue and catering Buffet RM38–RM130 per head; hotel banquet RM1,200–RM2,500 per table of ten Guest count × rate; the largest line but the most controllable
Photography and videography RM3,000–RM10,000 Hours, second shooter, same-day edit, album
Attire (both parties, all events) RM2,000–RM8,000 Number of outfits × rent-or-buy × alterations
Hantaran and tray preparation RM5,000–RM10,000 typical, RM10,000–RM15,000+ in urban KL; trays RM500–RM2,000 Community norm, family expectation, number of trays
Decor and flowers RM3,000–RM15,000 Fresh vs artificial, stage, table settings
Hall or venue hire Community hall RM400–RM1,800; hotel ballroom RM5,000–RM30,000 Capacity and location

Why the venue is not the problem

Venue and catering is the biggest line, and it is the one couples negotiate hardest. It is also the most controllable, because it is priced per head: cut twenty guests and the line falls by a known amount. Couples rarely overrun on the venue for exactly this reason. They know the number.

Where the money actually goes missing

Three components overrun far more often than the venue, and they share a trait: they are priced per item, added incrementally, and never totalled until the end.

Photography and videography. The base package is clear. Then: a second shooter, an extra hour, drone footage, a same-day edit, a printed album, a pre-wedding shoot. Each is a reasonable add-on. Together they can double the line.

Attire. Not one outfit: several, across the events, for both parties, plus alterations, plus accessories. Renting versus buying changes the total more than the choice of designer.

Hantaran and gifting. Priced by tray and by expectation, and the expectation is set by family rather than by the couple. This is the line most likely to be decided by someone who is not paying for it.

The three decisions that move the total most

Guest count. Every per-head line, food, favours, invitations, seating, scales with it. Cutting from 500 to 350 guests moves the total by more than any other single choice.

Rent or buy on attire. Buying makes sense for one outfit you will wear again. For the four or five that a multi-event wedding involves, renting typically halves the line.

The gifting conversation, early. Agreeing the hantaran norm with both families before vendors are booked prevents the most common late overrun. It is an uncomfortable conversation. It is far less uncomfortable than the one in month three.

Paying for it

Most weddings are funded from a mix: savings, family contribution, and, for a meaningful share of couples, borrowing. Where borrowing is part of the plan, the structure matters more than the amount. Spreading wedding costs across two or three credit cards at card interest rates is the expensive way to do it. A single structured personal loan at a fixed rate and known tenure costs less in total and, more importantly, ends on a known date.

The honest version of this advice is that the best wedding loan is a smaller wedding. But for a couple who has made the guest-count and attire decisions and still needs to bridge a gap, a structured facility beats revolving debt every time.

What couples say afterwards

Planners and photographers who write about this make the same two observations: couples overspend on things guests do not notice, and underspend on the photographs, which are the only part that lasts. The two-component rule follows directly: decide which two things matter to you, fund them properly, and let the rest be adequate.

THE MOVE
Pick your two. Cap the rest. Have the gifting conversation before the first vendor is booked.
