Comprehensive cover is priced on the Motor Tariff: a basic premium set by your engine capacity covers the first RM1,000 of sum insured, then every additional RM1,000 (or part thereof) adds a fixed amount. Your NCD comes off that, then any insurer discount, and finally service tax and stamp duty are added.

Third party cover is priced on engine capacity alone β€” the sum insured makes no difference to it, so that field is switched off. Third party pays for damage you cause to other people and their property, not to your own vehicle.

⚠ Motorcycle rates are calibrated against published market prices rather than taken from a published tariff, so the amounts are approximate. The calculation itself works the same way as for cars.

Motor premiums have been liberalised in Malaysia since July 2017, so insurers may price above or below the tariff and add loadings for driver age, location or optional cover (windscreen, special perils, legal liability to passengers). Treat this as an indicative estimate, not a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Car & Motorcycle Insurance Malaysia

How is my car or motorcycle insurance premium calculated?

Your premium depends on your vehicle’s sum insured, engine capacity, coverage type, No Claim Discount, and additional add-ons like windscreen or flood coverage, following Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia’s (PIAM) motor tariff framework.

What is the minimum car or motorcycle insurance required by law?

Third-party coverage is the legal minimum in Malaysia, paying only for damage or injury you cause to other people and their property, not damage to your own bike.

What's the difference between comprehensive and third-party insurance?

Comprehensive covers damage to your own car plus third-party liability, while third-party fire and theft or basic third-party only cover damage or loss you cause to others or your car from fire and theft.

How does No Claim Discount (NCD) work?

NCD is a premium discount that grows for each claim-free year, up to a maximum percentage, and it can typically be transferred if you change vehicles or insurers.

What is the maximum NCD for motorcycles?

Motorcycle No Claim Discount is capped at 25%, compared to up to 55% for private cars, and the rate is set by PIAM.

Is motorcycle NCD the same as my car NCD?

No, motorcycle and car NCD are tracked separately; a high NCD on your car doesn’t transfer to or apply on a motorcycle policy.

Does my NCD follow me or the motorcycle?

Your NCD is tied to you as the policyholder, so it generally follows you when you sell your bike and insure a new one, provided there’s no gap in coverage.

What's the difference between car insurance and takaful?

Takaful operates on Shariah-compliant mutual protection principles where participants contribute to a common fund, while conventional insurance is based on a risk-transfer contract with the insurer.

What happens to my NCD if I make a claim?

Generally, making a claim resets or reduces your NCD, though some policies offer NCD protection add-ons that preserve your discount after a limited number of claims.

What is market value versus agreed value coverage?

Market value coverage pays out based on your car’s value at the time of loss, while agreed value locks in a fixed payout amount agreed upfront, usually at a higher premium.

Can I renew my car or motorcycle insurance without an inspection?

Renewal without inspection is usually possible if there’s no lapse in coverage; a lapsed policy of a certain length typically requires a Puspakom inspection before a new policy is issued.

Should I get comprehensive insurance for a big bike?

For motorcycles worth RM20,000 and above, comprehensive coverage is generally recommended given the higher repair and replacement costs compared to smaller kapcai models.

Is windscreen coverage included by default?

Windscreen coverage is often an optional add-on rather than a default inclusion, so it’s worth checking your policy schedule before assuming you’re covered.

Do delivery or p-hailing riders need different insurance?

Yes, motorcycles used for commercial delivery or ride-hailing purposes typically require a commercial-use policy, since standard personal-use coverage may not apply to claims arising from paid delivery work.

What is legal liability to pillion coverage?

It’s an add-on that extends liability coverage to claims involving your passenger (pillion rider), which isn’t automatically included in a standard third-party policy.

How can I get the cheapest car or motorcycle insurance in Malaysia?

Comparing quotes across insurers, maintaining your NCD, and choosing only the add-ons you genuinely need are the main ways to keep your premium down.

What documents do I need to renew car or motorcycle insurance?

You’ll typically need your MyKad, vehicle registration card (geran), and previous cover note or policy schedule to process a renewal.

Does car or motorcycle insurance cover flood damage?

Flood damage is usually only covered if you’ve added the Special Perils cover to your policy; it isn’t included under standard comprehensive coverage by default.

Can young or new drivers get affordable car or motorcycle insurance?

Premiums for young or newly licensed drivers tend to be higher due to risk pricing, though building NCD over time and comparing insurers can help reduce costs.
