The more important question is how you want to gain exposure to gold.

Gold can be accessed through Bursa Malaysia derivatives, bank gold investment accounts, physical bullion and leveraged products such as XAU/USD contracts for difference (CFDs). They may all respond to movements in the gold market, but their costs, ownership structures, regulatory protections and risks are very different.

This matters especially when comparing local products with international trading apps. The Securities Commission Malaysia maintains a public register of licensed intermediaries and a separate Investor Alert List for unauthorised entities. The SC also states that investors dealing through unauthorised entities do not receive protection under Malaysian securities laws.

For that reason, Malaysian investors should start by understanding locally regulated options before comparing international CFD platforms.

Key Takeaways

Bursa Malaysia Gold Futures (FGLD) provide exchange-traded exposure to gold through the Malaysian derivatives market.

Malaysian banks also offer gold investment accounts that allow customers to buy and sell gold without storing bullion themselves.

Bank gold investment accounts should not be confused with normal deposits. They are margin-based derivatives. This means traders can control a position with less capital than the full underlying value, but leverage also magnifies adverse price movements.

Anyone considering FGLD should therefore check:

The latest Bursa contract specifications;

Current margin requirements;

Trading hours;

Brokerage and exchange-related charges;

Contract expiry and settlement rules; and

Whether the futures broker is properly licensed.

FGLD is traded through a licensed Bursa Malaysia derivatives broker rather than a bank account. Some broker groups also run share trading accounts, so you can compare share trading accounts and brokerage rates on iMoney, then confirm that your chosen firm offers FGLD.

Bank Gold Investment Accounts in Malaysia: A No-Leverage Alternative

Investors who do not need leverage may prefer a gold investment account offered by a Malaysian bank. These products generally allow customers to purchase gold based on a quantity measured in grams, hold the position electronically, and sell it back according to the bank’s prevailing prices.

For example, CIMB’s e-Gold Investment Account currently allows customers to start from 1 gram and transact through its online banking service. Public Bank’s Gold Investment Account and eGold Investment Account currently allow transactions from 0.1 gram, subject to their respective terms.

Maybank Islamic also offers the Maybank Islamic Gold Account-i (MIGA-i). According to Maybank Islamic’s official Product Disclosure Sheet dated 1 January 2026, MIGA-i is a Shariah-compliant gold investment account that provides exposure to gold of 999.9 purity. Customers can buy, sell, and transfer gold through Maybank2u, MAE, or over the counter, and they have the option to redeem their investment balance for physical gold bars in denominations ranging from 1 gram to 1,000 grams. The same Product Disclosure Sheet explicitly states that MIGA-i is not protected by Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM).

An important point is therefore worth remembering: a gold investment product being offered by a bank does not automatically mean that the investment receives deposit-insurance protection. PIDM’s own guidance lists gold-related investment products and accounts among those it does not protect. The CIMB, Public Bank and Maybank Islamic gold products reviewed for this article state that they are not protected by PIDM.

To see buying and selling prices side by side, you can compare gold investment accounts from participating banks on iMoney.

What to Compare Between Bank Gold Accounts

The difference between the bank’s selling price and buying price is particularly important. If a bank sells gold to customers at RM570 per gram but buys it back at RM560, for example, the investor begins with a RM10-per-gram gap that the gold price has to overcome before the position becomes profitable.

Also check:

Minimum purchase and sale amounts;

Trading hours;

Account or service fees;

Whether physical redemption is available;

Conditions attached to redemption;

Online versus branch transactions; and

Whether the product is conventional or Shariah-based if that distinction matters to you.

What Is XAU/USD and How Does Gold CFD Trading Work?

XAU/USD represents the price of gold against the US dollar. On many retail trading platforms, users gain exposure through a CFD rather than buying gold itself.

A CFD lets a trader speculate on whether the price will rise or fall. The trader and provider settle the difference in value, so ownership of a bar or quantity of physical gold is normally not involved. Leverage is a major part of CFD trading. It allows a trader to take a market position larger than the cash deposited as margin. That can increase potential gains, but losses are magnified in exactly the same way.

Malaysia has its own regulatory framework for CFDs under the Securities Commission’s Guidelines on Contracts for Difference. However, seeing a CFD app available online does not mean that the entity operating it is licensed by the SC.

International XAU/USD Trading Platforms: What Malaysians Should Know

Malaysian users will inevitably come across international gold trading platforms when researching XAU/USD.

One example is VT Markets. The company’s current regulatory disclosures identify VT Markets Limited as a Full-Service Investment Dealer regulated by the Financial Services Commission of Mauritius under licence number GB23202269.

That overseas regulation should not be presented as Securities Commission Malaysia licensing. A trader should check the exact legal entity named in the client agreement because international financial groups may operate through different companies in different jurisdictions.

Features such as MT4 or MT5 access, account types, spreads, charting tools, or mobile execution can still be compared. Regulatory status, however, needs its own separate assessment.

How to Check If a Gold Trading Platform Is Licensed in Malaysia

A common mistake is researching whether a brand is “regulated” without asking which company will actually hold the account.

Large trading groups can have several entities. One may be regulated in Mauritius, another in South Africa, and another in a different market.

The relevant question is:

Which legal entity is named in your account agreement?

Once you know that, check the corresponding regulator. For a provider claiming Malaysian licensing, use the Securities Commission Malaysia’s public register rather than relying on badges or statements shown in advertisements.

The SC Investor Alert List is another useful check. However, investors should not assume that absence from the alert list means a business is licensed. The SC itself states that the list is not exhaustive.

XAU/USD Trading Costs: Spread, Commission, Swap and Currency Conversion

Trading costs become particularly important for active CFD traders.

There are four common components to examine:

Spread

The spread is the difference between the buying and selling price. For gold CFDs, even a small change in spread can make a noticeable difference because position sizes may represent many ounces of gold.

Do not assume the “spreads from 0.0 pips” displayed on a broker’s homepage refers to XAU/USD. Promotional figures frequently refer to selected instruments or account conditions. Check the actual gold spread inside the trading platform during the hours you expect to trade.

Commission

Some accounts build most trading costs into the spread. Others offer tighter spreads and charge a separate commission. Neither model is automatically cheaper.

For example, suppose a broker defines one XAU/USD lot as 100 troy ounces. If the gold spread is $0.20 per ounce, the spread component would equal:

$0.20 × 100 = $20

If the account also charges a $6 round-turn commission, the total direct cost in this simplified example becomes:

$20 + $6 = $26

The important phrase here is “suppose a broker defines”. Contract sizes can vary, so traders must check the instrument specification instead of assuming every platform uses exactly the same lot structure.

Overnight Financing (Swap)

Leveraged CFDs may incur financing or swap charges when positions remain open across the provider’s rollover time.

The amount and charging schedule differ between providers and instruments. Some platforms may also apply multi-day financing on a specified rollover day to account for weekends.

Swap-free accounts can have different pricing structures or administration charges, so “swap-free” should not automatically be interpreted as “free to hold indefinitely.”

Currency Conversion (MYR to USD)

A Malaysian trader also needs to consider currency. If the trading account is denominated in USD but deposits and withdrawals originate in MYR, exchange-rate conversion can add another cost. It can also make the final MYR result slightly different from what the trading profit or loss alone suggests.

Gold Futures vs Gold Accounts vs CFDs: Which Fits Your Goal?

A direct ranking makes little sense because these products are designed differently.

If your priority is…

A product worth researching

Accessing an exchange-traded gold derivative in Malaysia

Bursa Malaysia FGLD

Holding gold exposure without leverage or storing bullion

Bank gold investment account

Owning the metal directly

Physical gold

Short-term leveraged speculation on XAU/USD

CFD, after checking regulatory status and risk

Buying or selling small quantities digitally

Selected bank or Bursa-operated digital gold products e.g. Bursa Gold Dinar (BGD)

For small, non-leveraged purchases, Bursa Malaysia’s own Bursa Gold Dinar app is another local route, and our overview of the Bursa Gold Dinar app explains how it works.

6 Checks Before Putting Money Into a Gold Trading Platform

1. Identify the Product

Are you buying physical gold, holding account-based gold, trading futures, or entering into a CFD? If you cannot clearly explain what you are buying, do not deposit yet.

2. Verify the Licensed Entity

Find the legal company name in the agreement rather than relying only on the brand shown in the app. For Malaysian capital-market providers, cross-check the SC’s licensed intermediary register.

3. Calculate the Complete Cost

Depending on the product, costs can include:

Buy/sell spread;

Commission;

Overnight financing;

Account fees;

Futures brokerage charges;

Currency conversion;

Storage; and

Physical redemption costs.

4. Understand Leverage Before Using It

Leverage reduces the capital needed to open a position, not the economic risk of that position. A gold price movement that looks small on a chart can have a much larger effect on a leveraged account.

5. Check How You Get Your Money Back

Look at withdrawal methods, settlement times, currency conversion, and any account restrictions. For physical gold, ask how and where it can be sold. For digital gold, check whether redemption is possible and what fees apply.

6. Test the Platform Before Committing Significant Capital

Where a demo facility is available, use it to learn order types, margin calculations and platform behaviour. For investment accounts, review the product disclosure sheet and actual buy/sell prices before purchasing.

How to Choose a Gold Trading Platform in Malaysia

First decide whether you need leveraged trading or simply want exposure to gold. Then compare routes available under Malaysia’s regulatory and banking framework, including Bursa Malaysia derivatives and bank gold investment accounts. Only after that comparison should international XAU/USD platforms enter the picture.

For anyone considering an overseas CFD provider, verify the legal entity, regulator, product specification, and full trading costs independently. An attractive spread or sophisticated mobile app cannot replace regulatory due diligence.

Gold itself may be one market, but the ways of accessing it are very different.
