You looked it up last night. You found three 2021 Myvis like yours on Mudah and Carlist, averaged the asking prices, and arrived at a figure. Call it RM44,000. You went to bed feeling slightly rich.

Then the salesman at the showroom looks at it, walks round it once, taps something into his phone, and says RM37,000.

Here is the thing nobody tells you in that moment. He is not cheating you. He is quoting you a price for a service. The service is: you never think about this car again. No ad, no strangers in your driveway, no Puspakom queue, no bank letter, no buyer who turns up with RM3,000 less than agreed and a sad face.

The RM7,000 gap is the fee for that. The only question worth asking is whether you want to pay it.

There are three ways to sell a car in Malaysia in 2026. Each one puts a different amount in your account, and each one takes a different amount out of your life. We put two cars through all three: a five-year-old Myvi and a five-year-old X70, both still on a loan. Here is what came out.

Three ways of selling your car in Malaysia

Trade-in. You hand the car to the dealer selling you the next one. He knocks his offer off the new car’s price. The offer is low because he must recondition it, hold it, and sell it at a profit, and because he knows you are already emotionally parked in the new car. In exchange he does everything, including settling your outstanding loan, often on the same day. Some brands sweeten this with a trade-in rebate on the new car. That rebate is real money and belongs in your sums.

Direct sale. You list the car yourself, meet buyers, agree a price, and do the transfer. You keep the dealer’s margin. You also inherit the dealer’s job: answering messages, arranging viewings, getting the MV15 inspection, clearing summonses, going to JPJ, and handling a buyer who needs a loan of their own. If you still owe the bank, the buyer’s money must clear your loan before JPJ will move the name.

Consignment. A dealer or platform displays and sells the car for you, and takes a fee or a cut when it sells. It usually fetches closer to market than a trade-in, because the dealer isn’t buying it, only brokering it. The catch is in the word “when.” Until it sells, the car is still yours. So is the insurance, the road tax, the depreciation, and the loan instalment.

The instant-offer platforms (Carsome, myTukar, Carro and the like) sit between the first and third. They bid on your car after an inspection, pay fast, and handle the paperwork. Think of them as a trade-in without the new car attached, and price them the same way.

Two cars, three cheques each

Both bought new in 2021 on a 90% loan over nine years, so both have four years of instalments left. Market prices are from October 2026 dealer and platform listings, with private asking prices a little above them. Settlement figures use the Hire-Purchase Act rebate on the remaining term charges; your bank’s letter will differ by a few hundred ringgit. All figures rounded and illustrative.

The Myvi. A 2021 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV. Carsome retails one at RM38,900 with 82,000 km; a dealer on Carlist asks RM53,800 for a low-mileage unit. Private sellers sit around RM44,000. Settlement on the original RM52,000 loan at 3.0% flat is about RM26,600.

<colgroup>
<col />
<col />
<col />
<col /></colgroup>

Myvi 1.5 AV (2021)

Trade-in

Direct sale

Consignment

Price achieved (RM)

37,000

42,000 (after haggling)

42,500

Sweetener (RM)

+1,000 trade-in rebate on the new car

—

—

Loan settlement (RM)

−26,600

−26,600

−26,600

Fees and costs (RM)

0

−600 (MV15 37.80, JPJ 100, detailing 300, ad boost, trips)

−1,275 fee (3%) −450 holding

Net to you (RM)

11,400

14,800

14,175

Time / your hours

Same day / 1 h

4–6 weeks / 10–12 h

3–6 weeks / 2 h

The X70. A 2021 Proton X70 1.8 TGDI Premium. Read the bottom lines twice. On the Myvi, the loan is small enough that every route leaves real money, and selling it yourself nets RM3,400 more than trading in. On the X70, the dealer’s offer barely clears the bank. Trade it in and you walk out with RM500 and a new nine-year loan. Sell it yourself and you walk out with RM4,900. Same car, same week, ten times the money.

Now divide. RM3,400 for roughly 11 hours of your time is about RM300 an hour. RM4,400 is RM400 an hour. If you earn more than that, the dealer is cheap. If you earn less, the dealer is expensive. That is the whole article, really. The rest is the fine print that moves those numbers around.

The costs nobody puts in the ad

The loan you haven’t finished. This is the big one. If the bank still holds the car, nobody’s name moves at JPJ until the bank is paid in full and issues a settlement letter. On our X70, five years into a nine-year loan, that letter says roughly RM54,500, which is more than the dealer offered for the car. That is not unusual for anything bought on a 90% loan over nine years; it is simply how the maths falls in year five. A dealer handles settlement routinely. A private buyer has to hand money to your bank before he owns anything, and plenty walk away at that point. Ask the bank for your settlement figure before you list. If the next car is already on your mind, the free car loan calculator will tell you what a shorter tenure on the new one does to the same problem in five years’ time.

The inspection. Every ownership transfer needs an MV15 inspection (the old B5). It is RM37.80 nationwide and valid for 30 days, so don’t do it before you have a buyer. If your buyer is financing, the bank will also want a B7 at about RM60, and as of mid-2026 only Puspakom does that one.

The transfer. JPJ charges RM100 to move a private car’s ownership in Peninsular Malaysia (Motorist.my). It can be done online through MySiKAP; JPJ pulled the online service for a day in May 2026 after reports of cars being transferred without the owner’s knowledge, then restored it (FMT, The Vibes). Lesson for sellers: never hand over the car or the keys before the name has moved. Lesson for everyone: check your MySiKAP account now and then.

The summonses. Unpaid PDRM or JPJ summonses block the transfer. Clear them first, or your buyer will negotiate them off the price at twice their value.

The waiting. A consigned car is still yours while it sits on the forecourt. Insurance keeps running, road tax keeps ticking, and the car loses value every month it waits. Budget RM400 to RM600 a month for a car in this range. Six weeks of “no reasonable offer refused” is not free.

The fatigue. The direct sale’s real cost isn’t the RM600. It is the Saturday you spend waiting for a buyer who doesn’t come, then taking RM1,500 less from the next one because you are tired of the whole thing. Decide your floor price before the first viewing, write it down, and don’t go below it on a bad day.

Which one is yours

Trade in if the brand is offering a real rebate on the new car, if your car is unusual enough that private buyers are scarce, or if you need the new car this week. Not because you still owe the bank. The X70 shows what that logic costs: the dealer’s offer barely clears the loan, and you begin the next nine years with RM500. Get two instant-offer quotes from the platforms first and show the dealer the higher one. His number moves more often than he lets on.

Sell it yourself if the car is popular, under eight years old, and you can spare a few evenings and one Saturday. That is where the RM3,400 to RM4,400 lives. If there is a loan, get the settlement letter first and tell buyers upfront that it is cleared at the bank with them present. Price it RM1,000 above your floor, not RM5,000, because overpriced cars attract no one and sit until you panic.

Consign if the car is unusual or expensive, where the right buyer takes time to find and a dealer’s showroom finds him faster than your phone will. Agree the fee in writing, agree a reserve price, and agree a date after which you take the car back. Open-ended consignment is a slow trade-in with extra steps.

If you are not sure, you are a direct seller who hasn’t decided yet. Do the inspection and the ad this weekend. If nothing serious comes in three weeks, the instant-offer platforms will still be there, and their quote will tell you whether your price was the problem.

The ten minutes before you say yes

Bank settlement figure in hand, and the date it is valid until

Three real asking prices for your exact year and spec, not the dreamers at the top of the list

Two instant-offer quotes, so you know the floor of the market

Summonses checked on MyJPJ and cleared

Service records, both keys, spare tyre, and the original invoice if you have it; each one is worth RM200 to RM500 to a nervous buyer

Your floor price, written down, before anyone sits in the driver’s seat

A plan for the transfer day: who pays the RM100 at JPJ, where the MV15 is done, and that the keys stay with you until the name has moved

One last thing about the RM7,000

Go back to the showroom for a moment. The salesman said RM37,000 for the Myvi and you felt robbed. Now you know what he was really saying: “I will take this problem off your hands for RM3,400. For the X70, RM4,400, and I’ll keep the car’s equity too.”

Some weeks that is a bargain. Some weeks it is a Saturday you would happily have spent. The number is the same. What changes is what your time is worth that month, and only you know that.

So don’t ask which route nets you the most. Ask which route nets you the most per hour of your life. Then take that one, and don’t look back at the ad for the car you sold. Someone always lists it for RM2,000 more.
