It’s Unread.

Your budget isn’t broken. It’s unread. Here is the weekly habit that changes that, and it takes less time than choosing something on Netflix.

Most budgets don’t fail in week one. They fail in week two, when nobody reads them.

Think about the last budget you made. It was probably payday, or the first of January, or the Sunday after a bank statement frightened you. You opened a spreadsheet or an app, you put in your salary, your rent, your car, your PTPTN, your food, and a number for “everything else” that you knew was a lie but wrote down anyway. It took about an hour. It felt good.

Then you didn’t open it again until the next time a statement frightened you.

That is not a discipline problem. That is a reading problem. A budget is a plan, and a plan that nobody looks at is a wish. The money didn’t leak because the plan was wrong. It leaked in the three weeks between making the plan and finding out what happened to it, and by then the leak was a hole.

So here’s the whole fix. Not a new app, not a stricter plan, not a different percentage rule. Just read the plan once a week. Fifteen minutes, Sunday, with a drink of your choice. Here’s how to spend them.

Minutes one to three: look at the real numbers

Open your banking app, not your budget. Write down three figures: what’s in your main account, what’s on your credit card right now, and what’s in whatever you call savings. Three lines, on paper or in your phone notes. Don’t judge them, don’t explain them to yourself, don’t open the spending breakdown. You are taking attendance, not holding a trial.

This matters more than it sounds. Most people know their salary to the ringgit and their balance to within about RM800. The gap between those two kinds of knowing is where the month goes.

A word about the card figure. If it’s the number you’ve been avoiding, and it has been sitting there for more than two months, the Sunday review will stop it growing but won’t make it go away. Run it once through the debt consolidation calculator so you know what clearing it would actually cost. Five minutes, no sign-up, and then at least you know.

Minutes four to eight: look at the next fourteen days

Now the part almost nobody does. Not what you’ve spent, but what is about to leave. Scroll your calendar or your head: card due date, car instalment, the Unifi or Maxis bill, insurance, the gym that still bills you, the streaming service you forgot you shared, that renewal that only shows up once a year and always on the worst week. Add anything with a date on it: a birthday, a wedding, a trip back to the kampung, the school thing.

Add them up roughly. Then look at the balance you wrote in minute one. The question is simple: does the money that’s there cover what’s about to leave, with something left for the week’s food and petrol? Most Sundays the answer is yes and you can relax. Some Sundays it’s no, and finding that out on Sunday instead of on Thursday at the petrol station is the entire value of this habit.

One more thing you’ll notice after a few Sundays. If the same instalment makes every fortnight tight, that isn’t a Sunday problem, it’s a tenure or rate problem. The home loan refinance calculator tells you in a few minutes whether yours is worth revisiting. Most people have never checked, which is why most people are still paying the rate they signed at.

Minutes nine to thirteen: make one adjustment

One. Not five. You’re allowed exactly one change a week, and the rule is deliberate, because five changes is a budget overhaul and you already know how those end.

If the next fourteen days are covered, your one adjustment might be moving RM100 to savings before the week can find it. If they aren’t, it might be cancelling the subscription you noticed in minute six, or deciding now that this week’s groceries are RM120 instead of RM180, or texting the friend to say you’ll meet for kopi instead of dinner. If a bill is due before payday and the money isn’t there, the adjustment is to call the bank or the provider on Monday rather than let it bounce. A late fee and a mark on your credit record cost more than an awkward phone call.

And if the honest answer is that it isn’t one bill but three cards and a loan taking turns, the adjustment is to stop juggling and talk to an adviser about putting them in one place. That’s a Monday conversation, not a Sunday one, and it costs nothing to have.

Small, specific, done this week. That’s the whole requirement.

Minutes fourteen and fifteen: write one line

Something like “4 Oct: RM1,840 in, RM600 going out by the 15th, moved RM100 to savings.” Twelve words. In a month you’ll have four lines and you will know more about your money than any app has ever told you, because you’ll know what you decided and whether it worked.

Why this works when the big plan didn’t

The big plan asked you to predict a month. Nobody can predict a month; a month has a funeral in it, or a flat tyre, or a cousin’s wedding. The Sunday review only asks you to see two weeks, and two weeks is a distance a human can actually see.

The big plan asked you to be a different person. The Sunday review asks you to be the same person for fifteen minutes with the banking app open.

And the big plan gave you a verdict once a month, usually a bad one, usually too late to do anything about. The review gives you a small, fixable answer every seven days. A RM200 overspend caught on Sunday is a smaller dinner. The same RM200 caught on the 28th is interest.

Where to start

Don’t start by making a budget. You’ve done that; it’s probably still in your Google Drive somewhere, and it’s fine.

Start by setting a 15-minute alarm for next Sunday night, labelled “money”. When it rings, open your banking app and write down three numbers. That’s the entire first week. You don’t have to adjust anything yet. You just have to look.

The budget was never the hard part. Looking was.

After the first four Sundays

Four lines in your log will tell you one of two things. Either the weeks balance with small adjustments, and the next question is whether your money is working as hard as it could: a card that pays you back on the spending you already do, or a home loan rate that reflects today’s market rather than the year you bought. Or the same shortfall shows up four weeks running, which means the problem isn’t the week. That’s when it’s worth running the numbers on a personal loan to consolidate, or sitting down with iMoney’s financial advisory team for a plan that goes further than fifteen minutes. The calculators are free and ask for nothing. The adviser conversation is free too. Neither will fix anything until you’ve done the looking, so start with the alarm.

The Sunday review at a glance

<colgroup>
<col />
<col />
<col /></colgroup>

Minutes

What you do

What you write down

1–3

Open the banking app, not the budget

Main balance, card balance, savings

4–8

List everything leaving in the next 14 days

Rough total of bills and dated spending

9–13

Make one adjustment, and only one

The change you’re making this week

14–15

Log it

One line: date, in, out, decision

Your budget isn’t broken.
