<\/span>The four lines<\/span><\/h2>\n

A typical delivery bill carries four charges beyond the food. Published reviews of the Malaysian platforms in 2026 put delivery fees in the RM2.50 to RM7 range depending on distance and demand, service or platform fees at roughly 5 to 9 percent of the food subtotal, and small-order fees of RM1 to RM3 when the basket sits below the outlet’s minimum. There is also a fifth cost that never appears as a line: restaurants pay the platforms a commission<\/a> of roughly 15 to 30 percent, which is why in-app menu prices often run above the same outlet’s counter prices.<\/p>\n

A delivery fee<\/strong>, which scales with distance and with demand at the time of ordering. A service or platform fee<\/strong><\/a>, usually a percentage of the food subtotal with a floor. A small-order fee<\/strong>, triggered when the food subtotal falls below a threshold. And, at some outlets, a packaging or restaurant fee<\/strong> set by the merchant. Names vary by platform. The structure does not.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Why small orders lose<\/span><\/h2>\n

Two of the four lines are effectively fixed per order. A fixed fee on a RM12 subtotal is a far larger percentage than the same fee on a RM40 subtotal. The small-order fee then adds insult: it exists specifically to make orders below the threshold uneconomic for the platform, so it lands on exactly the orders that are already carrying the heaviest percentage.<\/p>\n

The result is that the cheapest dish on the menu attracts the highest total mark-up. On a RM12 order the non-food lines can approach the price of the food. On a RM40 order the same lines are closer to a third.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Splitting an order does not help<\/span><\/h2>\n

Two people ordering separately from the same outlet pay the fixed lines twice. Combining into one order pays them once. This is the single largest lever most households never pull, because the apps are built for individual accounts.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The break-even against collecting it yourself<\/span><\/h2>\n

Delivery is not irrational. Against collecting the food yourself, the delivery order wins when the fee stack is less than what your time and travel are worth. For most people that is a real number, not zero. The point is that you should know what the number is. If the non-food lines on a RM12 lunch are RM12, you are paying RM12 for the twenty minutes you did not spend collecting it, and that is a fair trade or a bad one depending on the day.<\/p>\n

<\/span>What a card does and does not fix<\/span><\/h2>\n

A card that returns a percentage on food delivery offsets part of the stack, but only part, and only if the cashback cap sits above your monthly spend. A 5% return on a RM24 order is RM1.20 against RM12 of fees. It softens the cost. It does not change the arithmetic.<\/p>\n

<\/span>What actually changes the maths<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ordering once for two meals rather than twice. Meeting the small-order threshold rather than paying the fee to sit under it. Choosing the closer of two equivalent outlets, since distance drives one of the two largest lines. None of these are sacrifices. They are the same food with fewer fixed charges attached.<\/p>\n
