<\/span>What octane actually is<\/span><\/h2>\n

The RON number measures a fuel’s resistance to pre-ignition: the knock that happens when the fuel and air mixture ignites from compression before the spark plug fires. High-compression engines and turbocharged engines squeeze the mixture harder, so they need fuel that can take it without igniting early. That is what RON97 is for.<\/p>\n

<\/span>What it is not<\/span><\/h2>\n

Octane is not a measure of energy content, cleanliness or power. An engine designed for RON95 running on RON97 does not produce more power, run cleaner or last longer in any way you could measure. The engine management system is tuned for 95 and has no use for the extra knock resistance. The fuel simply costs more.<\/p>\n

The reverse is where damage actually happens. An engine that requires RON97 and is fed RON95 can knock under load, and the manual’s stated minimum is the manufacturer’s floor, not a suggestion.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The one-minute test<\/span><\/h2>\n

Open the fuel flap or the manual’s fuel page. It states the minimum octane the engine requires. If it says RON 95, you have your answer. If it says RON 97, keep using it. There is no third case.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Why the gap changed<\/span><\/h2>\n

Since 30 September 2025, RON95 has not been under a blanket subsidy. Eligible Malaysians with a valid driving licence buy it at RM1.99 a litre under BUDI Madani RON95, known as BUDI95<\/a>, within a monthly quota that was restored to 300 litres on 1 September 2026. Everyone else, and everyone above the quota, pays the unsubsidised price, which moves weekly under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism.<\/p>\n

For 10 to 16 September 2026, unsubsidised RON95 is RM4.02 and RON97 is RM4.50<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So for a driver inside the quota, choosing RON97 means paying RM4.50 for fuel that would otherwise cost RM1.99. The gap is RM2.51 a litre. Above the quota, the comparison is RM4.02 against RM4.50, a 48 sen gap<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The annual number<\/span><\/h2>\n

A car doing 15,000 km a year at 7 litres per 100 km uses about 1,050 litres. Inside the quota, choosing RON97 over subsidised RON95 costs roughly RM2,600 a year. Above the quota, the same choice costs about RM500.<\/p>\n

For an engine that requires RON97, that is the cost of running the car properly. For an engine rated for RON95, it is the purest example in personal finance of paying for a specification you cannot use, the same pattern as insurance riders that do not apply to you and phone plans priced on data you never touch.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Two things people get wrong<\/span><\/h2>\n

Mixing the grades produces a mid-octane blend. It is not harmful in a RON95 engine, but it is still paying extra for nothing. And filling up early in the morning does not help; the fuel is stored in underground tanks at a stable temperature.
