GWM’s Merdeka promotion<\/a>, announced 18 August, cuts the Ora Good Cat Ultra to RM94,800 \u2014 RM15,000 off the RM109,800 list price \u2014 until 30 September. The deal includes a free AC wallbox charger, five years of maintenance and a Touch ‘n Go RFID tag. (The higher-spec GT variant is excluded.)<\/p>\n

That headline makes an EV genuinely comparable to a well-specced petrol sedan for many households for the first time. But sticker price is maybe half the story. Here’s the rest, with real 2026 numbers.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The deal on the table<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Ultra carries a 57.7kWh LFP battery \u2014 the chemistry known for tolerating daily charging well. The free wallbox matters more than it looks: a home charger typically costs RM3,000\u20135,000 installed, and home charging is where EV economics actually work. Free maintenance for five years removes another line from the comparison entirely.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Road tax: the myth that died in January<\/span><\/h2>\n

“EV road tax mahal” was true under the old kilowatt bands \u2014 and died on 1 January 2026, when the new EV road tax schedule<\/a> kicked in. Under it, the Good Cat pays about RM80 a year. A BYD Atto 3 sits around RM160. A Toyota Vios? RM90. Across the segment, road tax is now a rounding error in either direction \u2014 cross it off your decision list.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Fuel vs charge: the per-100km truth<\/span><\/h2>\n

Here’s where it gets interesting, because 2026 fuel pricing has two tiers. Within your BUDI95 quota (200 litres a month via MyKad), subsidised RON95 costs RM1.99\/L; beyond the quota \u2014 or if you’re not eligible \u2014 the unsubsidised price this week is RM3.77\/L.<\/p>\n

Run the per-100km numbers, illustratively: a frugal petrol sedan at 6L\/100km costs about RM11.90 within quota, or RM22.60 unsubsidised. The Good Cat at roughly 13kWh\/100km on home charging at typical domestic tariffs runs around RM3 per 100km \u2014 a full charge of the 57.7kWh pack lands near RM13 for ~400km of range. Even against subsidised petrol, home-charged electricity is roughly a quarter of the running cost; against unsubsidised RON95 it’s closer to an eighth. Drive 1,500km a month and the fuel gap alone is roughly RM130 (vs subsidised) to RM290 (vs unsubsidised) monthly. <\/span>The catches: quota, resale, insurance<\/span><\/h2>\n

Honesty section. One: the comparison depends on which petrol price is really yours \u2014 if you rarely exceed the BUDI95 quota, use RM1.99 in your maths, not RM3.77. Two: EV resale values in Malaysia are still finding their floor; assume conservative residuals rather than petrol-car norms. Three: public DC charging costs multiples of home charging \u2014 the economics above assume you can charge where you park. And four, the one that connects to last week’s news: that free wallbox is a hard-wired fixture \u2014 declare it to your home insurer in writing, and consider the dedicated wallbox add-ons now on the market. <\/span>The loan trap hiding in low monthlies<\/span><\/h2>\n

Dealers will happily quote a 9-year tenure to make the monthly look tiny. Resist comparing monthlies; compare total interest. On RM85,000 financed, stretching from 5 to 9 years can add several thousand ringgit in interest while keeping you upside-down on the car’s value for longer. Run the actual figures for your deposit and tenure before you’re sitting at the sales desk.<\/p>\n

Build two 5-year totals with your real monthly kilometres: (price \u2212 expected resale) + fuel\/charge + road tax + insurance + maintenance. Use YOUR true petrol price (quota or not). If the EV wins on your numbers \u2014 not the ad’s \u2014 the Merdeka window closes 30 September.
