It&#8217;s the one EPF account you can dip into without proving hardship. But \u201ccan withdraw\u201d and \u201cshould withdraw\u201d are two very different questions, and the gap between them compounds, literally, for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-does-withdrawing-RM5000-today-actually-cost-you-at-55\"><\/span><b>What does withdrawing RM5,000 today actually cost you at 55?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPF dividends aren&#8217;t a bonus on top of your balance, they&#8217;re the engine of it. Money pulled out of Akaun 3 stops earning that dividend immediately, and what it would have earned never gets a chance to compound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a 35-year-old with 20 years left to age 55. Based on EPF&#8217;s declared dividend rates of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwsp.gov.my\/en\/w\/epf-declares-630-dividend-for-simpanan-konvensional-and-630-for-simpanan-shariah-ln\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.30% for 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwsp.gov.my\/en\/w\/news\/epf-declares-6-15-dividend-for-simpanan-konvensional-and-6-15-for-simpanan-shariah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.15% for 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a realistic long-run average sits somewhere in the 5.5%\u20136.0% range EPF has delivered over the past decade. Run RM5,000 through that math:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 5.5% average annual dividend: RM5,000 grows to roughly <\/span><b>RM14,600<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by age 55<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 6.0% average annual dividend: RM5,000 grows to roughly <\/span><b>RM16,000<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by age 55<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*This is an illustrative projection based on a hypothetical 20-year horizon and historical average rates, not a guarantee. EPF&#8217;s dividend is not fixed in advance and Simpanan Konvensional is only guaranteed a legal minimum of 2.5% per year.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So a RM5,000 withdrawal isn&#8217;t a RM5,000 decision. It&#8217;s a decision that costs roughly triple that amount in forgone retirement income, and the earlier in your career you withdraw, the more compounding years you sacrifice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When-does-it-actually-make-sense-to-touch-Akaun-3\"><\/span><b>When does it actually make sense to touch Akaun 3?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every withdrawal is wealth destruction. Liquidity has value too, going into high-interest debt to avoid tapping Akaun 3 can be the worse trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cases where withdrawing can be the rational move:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearing credit card debt at the ceiling rate. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnm.gov.my\/-\/guidelines-on-credit-card-operations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bank Negara Malaysia caps credit card finance charges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at up to 18% per annum, with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnm.gov.my\/-\/bank-negara-malaysia-memperkenalkan-struktur-harga-berperingkat-untuk-menggalakkan-disiplin-kewangan-yang-baik-di-kalangan-pengguna-kad-kredit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tiered structure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can push cardholders without a strong repayment track record to that 18% ceiling. No investment, including EPF&#8217;s own dividend, reliably beats an 18% guaranteed \u201creturn\u201d from debt avoided. If Akaun 3 funds can extinguish revolving credit card debt in full, the math favours withdrawal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding predatory or unregulated lenders. The same logic applies to illegal moneylending (\u201cAh Long\u201d) or other high-cost informal credit, Akaun 3 is almost always the cheaper option.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A true, one-off emergency with no other liquid buffer, provided the amount withdrawn is the minimum needed, not a round-number top-up \u201cwhile I&#8217;m at it.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Cases where it quietly erodes your retirement:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawing for discretionary spending, renovations, gadgets, holidays, that could be saved for or financed through a lower-cost personal loan instead<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making Akaun 3 withdrawals a recurring habit rather than a last resort, since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwsp.gov.my\/en\/member\/life-stages\/akaun-fleksibel-withdrawal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPF&#8217;s own withdrawal terms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set no cap on withdrawal frequency, only a RM50 minimum per transaction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawing to repay low-interest debt (e.g., some personal loans or BNPL arrangements under 10% p.a.), where the EPF dividend you&#8217;re giving up may exceed the interest you&#8217;re saving<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rule of thumb: if the debt or expense costs more per year than EPF&#8217;s dividend has historically paid, liquidity usually wins. If it costs less, preservation usually wins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How-many-Malaysians-are-actually-on-track\"><\/span><b>How many Malaysians are actually on track?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPF&#8217;s own numbers suggest most aren&#8217;t. As of October 2024, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwsp.gov.my\/en\/w\/epf-releases-belanjawanku-2024\/2025-and-retirement-income-adequacy-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPF reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that only about 36% of active formal-sector members met the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then-current<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Basic Savings benchmark of RM240,000 at age 55.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That benchmark has since moved. Under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwsp.gov.my\/en\/w\/epf-releases-belanjawanku-2024\/2025-and-retirement-income-adequacy-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPF&#8217;s Retirement Income Adequacy (RIA) Framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, effective January 2026, the bar was raised significantly: <\/span><b>Basic Savings is now RM390,000, Adequate Savings RM650,000, and Enhanced Savings RM1.3 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all measured at age 60, based on a monthly drawdown model designed to last roughly 20 years. With the goalpost higher, every ringgit withdrawn from Akaun 3 today makes that target measurably harder to reach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your-Move\"><\/span><b>Your Move<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Before withdrawing, price the alternative. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it&#8217;s credit card debt above the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnm.gov.my\/-\/guidelines-on-credit-card-operations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15%-18% BNM ceiling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Akaun 3 is likely your cheapest fix. If it&#8217;s discretionary spending, treat the withdrawal as a real cost, not free money.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Check where you sit against RIA&#8217;s Basic Savings tier for your age, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not just your total balance, via i-Akaun.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>If you must withdraw, withdraw only what&#8217;s needed. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RM50 minimums per transaction mean you can always go back, but you can&#8217;t undo dividends already forgone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rebuild the habit, not just the balance. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider i-Saraan or voluntary top-ups to offset a withdrawal once your cash flow stabilises.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See if a lower-cost loan beats withdrawing altogether \u2192 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/imoney-pre-screening?src=menu_top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your eligibility with iMoney&#8217;s Pre-Screening tool<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Withdrawing RM5,000 from Akaun 3 today could mean losing up to RM16,000 by age 55.
