That gap of around RM22,000 comes entirely from compounding, not from your own pocket.

The maths uses EPF’s average historical dividend performance as a guide. For 2025, EPF declared a dividend rate of 6.15% for both Simpanan Konvensional and Simpanan Shariah, a slight step down from the 6.30% rate declared for 2024. Actual future rates will vary year to year, but at a steady ~6% return, RM100 a month compounds monthly for 240 months into roughly RM46,000, money that then keeps earning dividends of its own for as long as it stays in the account.

This is the core mechanic of compound interest: your dividends don’t just sit there, they get added to your balance and start earning dividends themselves the following year. The earlier the top-up starts, the more years that snowball has to run.

Why Does Such a Small Amount Make Such a Big Difference?

It comes down to time, not the size of the contribution. Because EPF dividends compound annually and top-ups can be made monthly through i-Saraan or direct EPF contributions, even a modest, consistent amount benefits from two decades of uninterrupted growth. Waiting 10 years before starting the same RM100 top-up roughly halves the eventual gain, since you lose the years where compounding does most of its heavy lifting.

This is also why EPF top-ups are often described as one of the lowest-effort ways to build retirement savings in Malaysia, the fund is managed on your behalf, dividends are based on the actual performance of the underlying investment portfolio, and there’s a guaranteed minimum dividend rate of 2.50% for Simpanan Konvensional even in a weak year.

What’s the Catch? Can Compounding Work Against You Too?

Yes, and this is where the same maths turns costly. Credit card debt in Malaysia compounds the same way EPF savings do, except the rate runs against you instead of for you. Bank Negara Malaysia caps credit card finance charges at no more than 1.5% per month, or 18% per annum, applied under a tiered system based on your repayment track record over the past 12 months.

At that ceiling, an unpaid RM5,000 balance accrues roughly RM900 a year in interest alone, money that adds nothing to your net worth and simply grows the debt further if left unpaid. Unlike EPF, where compounding builds an asset, credit card compounding builds a liability that gets harder to clear the longer it’s carried.

Should You Top Up EPF or Clear Debt First?

For most people carrying a card balance, clearing that debt should come before increasing voluntary EPF contributions. An 18% annual cost on unpaid card debt outweighs a ~6% annual return on EPF savings, so every ringgit that goes toward EPF top-ups while a card balance sits unpaid is effectively earning 6% in one account while losing 18% in another.

The practical order is usually: clear high-interest debt first, then redirect that same monthly amount into consistent EPF top-ups once the balance is gone. This doesn’t mean giving up on retirement savings, it means sequencing it so compounding works for you instead of against you.

Your Move

Check what you’re carrying. Log into your credit card statement and note the outstanding balance and current interest tier.

See if consolidation makes sense.
