The government has agreed, in principle, to remove RON95 petrol subsidies for rich Malaysians. The only thing still being worked out is who exactly counts as “rich”.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>Free Malaysia Today (FMT)<\/span><\/a>, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the proposed review is being studied by the National Economic Action Council’s (MTEN) crisis management task force, led by corporate figure Hassan Marican. The task force is weighing whether the cut-off should be set at T5, T10, T15 or T20 income groups, and Putrajaya wants to avoid accidentally squeezing the upper-middle class.<\/span><\/p>\n

“In principle, we agree, but we don’t want it to impact the upper-middle class. So, they are working on it, we will finalise it soon, I hope,” Anwar told reporters on the sidelines of an event at Universiti Malaya.<\/span><\/p>\n

Right now, every Malaysian with a valid driving licence pays RM1.99 per litre for RON95, capped at 200 litres a month. In East Malaysia, subsidised diesel is RM2.15 per litre, compared with RM5.17 in Peninsular Malaysia. If the proposal goes through, anyone in the affected income tier would lose access to that subsidised rate and pay closer to the unsubsidised market price.<\/span><\/p>\n

The savings for the country could be significant. As reported by FMT, Putra Business School economist Ahmed Razman Abdul Latiff said excluding the rich from fuel subsidies could save Putrajaya up to RM1.5 billion a month, money that could be redirected as aid to lower and middle-income households. For context, Putrajaya spent around RM5 billion on fuel subsidies in April alone, after the Iran war pushed up crude oil prices.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for what the average Malaysian can do right now, check your household income tier on LHDN’s e-Filing summary or against the latest DOSM income brackets. If your combined monthly household income is above roughly RM11,800, you’re in T20 territory, and depending on where the cut-off lands, you may need to budget an extra RM50-RM100 a month for unsubsidised RON95 if you’re filling up around 100 litres a month.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cut-off level is still being debated for a reason. T5 affects only the very top earners; T20 on the other hand, captures a much wider slice of Malaysians who feel financially squeezed already. Knowing which tier you fall into now means you’ll react faster, and budget more accurately, once the policy is finalised.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watch for the MTEN task force’s final recommendation in the coming weeks. Once a specific income threshold is announced, the change is likely to roll out quickly, and Malaysians on the wrong side of the line will want to have done their household maths early.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
