Great news fellow Malaysians! The government just handed you an extra day off for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and the Human Resources Ministry is now <\/span>side-eyeing your employer<\/span><\/a> to make sure you actually get to enjoy it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s how it works: if Raya falls on a Friday (20 March), the bonus holiday lands on Monday, 23 March, giving you a glorious long weekend. If Raya falls on a Saturday (21 March), the extra day swings to Friday instead. Either way, you’re getting a long, 4-day weekend. This means more time to eat rendang, collect duit raya, and come up with reasons to dodge the “bila nak kahwin?\u201d questions that are inevitably coming your way.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ministry says the whole point is to give Malaysians enough breathing room to travel home and celebrate with family without feeling like they need to rush back before the kenduri table is even cleared. They’ve officially called this a move to support work-life balance and a “caring and progressive employment practice”, which is a rather roundabout way of saying: please, bosses, just be nice.<\/span><\/p>\n

For employers wondering about the fine print, the extra holiday falls under the Holidays Act 1951 and is considered a full public holiday for private sector employees under Section 60D of the Employment Act 1955. So yes, it’s legit, and no, employers can’t pretend it doesn’t exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the declared date doesn’t work for business operations, the holiday can be swapped for another day. Employers will have to tell their employees beforehand, no sneaky silent substitutions. Workers need to know whether they’re getting the holiday on the official date or on a replacement day.<\/span><\/p>\n

If employers absolutely need their staff to come in on that public holiday? That’s allowed too, but they will be required to pay staff at the public holiday rate. No discounts. No “we’ll make it up to you” promises that may or may not materialise.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ministry wrapped up its message on an optimistic note, saying it has full confidence that employers and employees can work things out through constructive discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n

So there you have it, an extra day off, backed by law, with a gentle government nudge to your employer. Now, we hope you have filled up your gas tank before the huge <\/span>price hike last week<\/span><\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n
