But it won\u2019t stop you from doing it again, every single month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>That\u2019s microspending<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And it\u2019s exactly what MadNor\u2019s been calling out the Gen-Zs for. MadNor isn\u2019t a financial guru or an expert in finance. He\u2019s just the elder online average joe that talks like one of us, but brave enough to honestly and bluntly point out what we all already know about Gen-Z&#8217;s spending habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best part? The Gen-Zs didn\u2019t skip his content. They stopped doomscrolling, listened, interacted, reflected, and even asked for more financial advice. With his satirical way of calling them out, he became a viral yet responsible abang whom they \u2018janji\u2019 to, to improve their own financial lives. But that reaction didn\u2019t come out of nowhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why did Abang MadNor do it?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, when someone advises the younger generation on how to spend their money, it can trigger them, which sometimes leads to cancel culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of sounding preachy or demanding, MadNor wasn\u2019t saying, &#8220;Stop buying Americano&#8221;. He said, <\/span><b>\u201cIf you continue to spend like this every day, for the rest of your life, don\u2019t be surprised when and why you\u2019re always broke.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He let them paint the bigger financial picture themselves. And here\u2019s the thing: <\/span><b>Gen-Zs are not as financially clueless as one may think<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstoday.com.my\/2025\/09\/23\/gen-z-malaysians-put-family-finance-and-digital-first-in-shaping-consumer-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Today article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Visa Malaysia\u2019s Gen-Z Decoded study, about 61% of Gen-Z Malaysians prioritise family, budgeting, digital tools, and future financial stability when shaping their spending habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when MadNor called out Gen-Z, it was more familiar than insulting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>And if you\u2019re wondering, yes, social media platforms play a significant role in supporting this Gen-Z spending behaviour.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When everyone around you is ordering the same drink, unboxing the same blind box, or suddenly wearing the same brand, fear of missing out (FOMO) kicks in, and spending stops feeling like a financial decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s when you realise you\u2019re not spending for your own joy anymore, but you\u2019re spending on the hype and the short-term sense of belonging that comes with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t surprising, given that Gen-Zs are chronically online, with platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube competing for their screen time. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sinardaily.my\/article\/730337\/focus\/money\/from-side-gigs-to-social-media-buys-how-gen-z-malaysians-spend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinar Daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 48% of Gen-Z respondents in Visa Malaysia\u2019s Gen Z Decoded study immediately add an item to their cart and checkout after seeing it in a social media advertisement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it doesn\u2019t stop there. When social media influencers and creators they have been following and trust promote a product online, they may be swayed to buy it simply because it seems socially validating in the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, social media platforms aren\u2019t just their entertainment venue anymore. It\u2019s now becoming their one-stop shopping outlet too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s what MadNor also pointed out: <\/span><b>when spending, lifestyle, and identity are constantly showcased on their feed,<\/b> <b>it becomes more \u201cnormal\u201d to buy it.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Treating yourself with intention isn\u2019t the problem here. Treating yourself impulsively is.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s okay to spend after saving your hard-earned money, especially if it gives you something to look forward to in life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not okay to spend the same hard-earned money because it\u2019s viral everywhere, or because not spending means you will be unable to keep up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s how your bank account stays empty, even with minimal spending of RM5 here and RM30 there.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>So, what is abang MadNor really calling out the Gen-Zs for?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wasn\u2019t judging how they are spending their money nor asking them to stop spending. He was just being honest when he asked them to think about where their money is going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And maybe that\u2019s why Gen-Zs are actually listening to him.
