The list of personal and financial sacrifices I&#8217;d have to make seemed endless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s just a glimpse:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less time<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less money<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving up hobbies<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving up sleep\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discomfort of pregnancy<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain of labour\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain of breastfeeding<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical expenses\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Childcare expenses\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career pause<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parenthood penalty<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender pay gap<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial uncertainty\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many in my life stage have found themselves making these same considerations. Is it any wonder then that Malaysia&#8217;s birth rate has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/1260784\/alarming-birth-rate-decline-threatens-malaysias-economic-future-watch#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plummeted to a record low<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Q1 2025?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we&#8217;re not alone. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/clynq459wxgo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global fertility crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been raising louder alarm bells in the last few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humankind&#8217;s replacement rate is 2.1; that is, 2.1 births per woman in order to sustain our population. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fertility rate in Malaysia is currently 1.6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 way below what&#8217;s needed for our long-term economic stability. Ironically, our improving economy might be part of the problem; it&#8217;s been observed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2025\/10\/rising-birth-rates-no-longer-tied-to-economic-prosperity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility tends to drop <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as economic prosperity rises. (Hurray for us, I guess?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, we&#8217;re plodding down the path of other developed nations like South Korea (1.1), Japan (1.4), and the USA (1.8), where <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low birth rates are even more severe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the #1 reason people cite for not having kids? Drumroll!&#8230;It&#8217;s&#8230;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/34607\/most-common-reason-for-not-having-children\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqMJmXAiXwRnQbFijJKP5ypj_8KrcvsQUovVnK_ijaIS4aq0m0T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial limitations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I&#8217;m sure nobody&#8217;s surprised, it is strange to think about. Those who can seemingly best afford to have children feel the least financially equipped for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the richer we get, the fewer kids we think we can afford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what gives?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-rising-cost-of-parenthood\"><\/span><b>The rising cost of parenthood<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-68967 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/14182916\/iMoney_04-Kids_Article-Img-800x419.png\" alt=\"Young girl with long dark hair brushing a teddy bear toy while sitting on a beige couch at home.\" width=\"800\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/14182916\/iMoney_04-Kids_Article-Img-800x419.png 800w, https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/14182916\/iMoney_04-Kids_Article-Img-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/14182916\/iMoney_04-Kids_Article-Img-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/14182916\/iMoney_04-Kids_Article-Img.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a different era of Malaysia, my father arrived as the 6th child of a growing family. 5 more children were to follow \u2013 a whopping 11 siblings. My mother&#8217;s family was no different; she was the youngest of 10 siblings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a few decades ago, large families like theirs were the norm. Today, young parents struggle with the decision to have ONE child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference? Back then, children were seen as assets. They could be put to work, contribute to the family, and support their parents in their old age. Now, many of us see children as financial liabilities instead. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the numbers back this up. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.com.my\/en\/knowledge-hub\/plan-well\/cost-of-raising-a-child-in-malaysia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cost of raising a child in Malaysia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranges from RM400,000 to RM1.1 million from pregnancy through university, with education taking the biggest chunk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These rising living costs have changed how family planning looks for our generation. Young couples are delaying marriage to focus on career advancement and financial stability first. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myageing.upm.edu.my\/artikel\/interactive_more_women_are_delaying_marriage_heres_why_and_why_it_matters-67608#:~:text=MENU,to%2028.1%20years%20in%202020.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average age of marriage for Malaysian women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jumped from 23.5 years in 1980 to 28.1 years in 2020. by the time they feel financially ready, many precious baby-making years have already slipped away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-motherhood-penalty\"><\/span><b>The motherhood penalty<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another explanation for why higher income countries tend to have fewer babies is rising equality between genders. Women&#8217;s equality, education and financial independence lead to less baby-making. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wol.iza.org\/articles\/female-education-and-its-impact-on-fertility\/long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More choice, fewer children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, duh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biologically, women must consider the cost of pregnancy, labour and breastfeeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Culturally, women tend to bear the burden of running a household, even if both partners work full-time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financially, women take a hit in the form of career interruptions, discrimination and a growing pay gap. Studies show that having children can cost women <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/27\/500000-career-penalty-working-moms-bankrate-census-bureau-new-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to $500,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RM2,101,750) across the course of their careers. Rising childcare costs and lack of flexible work arrangements are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mother.ly\/news\/2024-state-of-motherhood-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pushing mothers out of the workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 but meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/03\/26\/women-experience-a-motherhood-penalty-for-dads-theres-a-pay-bump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dads often get a pay bump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after having a baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So while some may paint women who choose not to have children as selfish, the data reveals that motherhood requires so much personal sacrifice that the choice is almost impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those of my generation, none of this is new news. But how does it impact our country&#8217;s economic well-being? Why are countries everywhere panicking over this &#8220;crisis&#8221;?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-cost-of-childlessness-to-a-country\"><\/span><b>The cost of childlessness to a country\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major concern is an ageing population. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11376998\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malaysia&#8217;s aging population<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will shoot up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 7.9% in 2010 to 15% by 2030, and continue growing from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When seniors outnumber babies, our population, workforce and domestic consumer base will all shrink, leading to less money circulating the system. A smaller taxpayer base will mean less money for healthcare and infrastructure \u2013 two things that, incidentally, seniors highly depend on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The math gets even worse when you look at retirement preparedness. When it comes to taking care of ourselves, Malaysians are scarily unprepared. Only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/malaysia\/blog\/navigating-future-care-older-persons-malaysia-2040-community-support-technological-integration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">58% of 54-year-olds have less than RM100,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saved in their EPF. (For context, you need RM240,000 to generate a measly monthly income of RM1,000.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s bad enough that the government has recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/malaysia\/2025\/10\/08\/govt-reviewing-proposal-to-introduce-new-epf-structure-with-flexible-and-retirement-income-components-parliament-told\/193895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed changes to EPF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help us manage our retirement funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eventual outcome? Fewer young people will exist to support a bigger (and badly-prepared) base of old people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BTW, those future old people are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">us<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Millennials and Gen Zs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So-who-pays-the-price\"><\/span><b>So who pays the price?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The paradox is clear. For individuals, choosing childlessness is financially rational. For our country, it&#8217;s a collective disaster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the current system places the burden of parenthood squarely on individuals \u2013 and disproportionately on women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the solution then? I wish I had neat answers to give you, like affordable childcare, longer parental leave, flexible working arrangements. Some countries like Denmark and Sweden have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/fandd\/issues\/Series\/Analytical-Series\/new-economics-of-fertility-doepke-hannusch-kindermann-tertilt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practiced this to some success<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but none have brought their birth rates back up to replacement rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because simple fixes like &#8220;giving cash&#8221; or &#8220;offering more leave&#8221; don&#8217;t address underlying issues. Cultural norms that make mothers the default parent. Housing costs that demand dual incomes. The growing demands of intensive parenting. Gender discrimination baked into workplace structures. The expectation that parents should bear all these costs alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the solution, then, starts by asking how we can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> share the cost of parenthood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, you can&#8217;t solve a national problem through individual sacrifice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I personally counted the cost of having a child, it was clear that the math didn&#8217;t add up for me. But there was that irrational tug in my heart: I wanted to experience the magic of a new life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I made that choice knowing it defied logic. And I don&#8217;t expect my fellow career-climbing women to reach this same irrational conclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My question is: Should having a child require an irrational leap of faith?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or can we build a Malaysia where the choice to become a parent isn&#8217;t an act of financial self-sabotage?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A declining birth rate spells disaster for our economic future.
