The fuel for the vehicle\u2019s daily usage, the maintenance fees incurred by said vehicle, insurance for the vehicle, and the road tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, every vehicle user will have to pay the amount specified for their vehicle\u2019s road tax, along with the insurance for said vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But have you ever wondered how the rates for the road tax is calculated? In this article, that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to explore.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-is-a-road-tax\"><\/span><b>What is a road tax?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before we can explore just how our road taxes are calculated, first we have to understand just what exactly is a road tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And to understand road tax, there is one big misconception that we need to clear up first.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Road-tax-doesnt-exist\"><\/span><b>Road tax doesn\u2019t exist<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is; there is no such thing as a road tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you look closely on your so-called \u2018road tax\u2019 sticker, do you see the words road tax or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cukai jalan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> printed anywhere on it? No?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because the official name for it is actually a Malaysian Vehicle Licence or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lesen Kenderaan Malaysia <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(LKM).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So without an LKM, it means that your car cannot be driven legally on Malaysian roads. We\u2019re still going to call it a road tax in this article, because that\u2019s how most people refer to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-happens-if-we-drive-without-a-road-tax\"><\/span><b>What happens if we drive without a road tax?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re caught driving a vehicle without a valid road tax, you\u2019re liable to be charged under Section 15(1) and Section 90(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries with it a compound of RM300.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Four-factors-that-affect-road-tax-rates\"><\/span><b>Four factors that affect road tax rates<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand how road tax rates are calculated, first we need to acknowledge that there are four factors that affect the rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These four factors are;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engine capacity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Location<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicle type<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ownership type<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now let\u2019s have a look at how these three factors affect how much you pay.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Engine capacity<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How engine capacity affects your road tax is very simple, the bigger the engine capacity, the more you end up paying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ruling came about because when the government started issuing road taxes, they wanted to tax the vehicles with larger engine capacities more, as they produce more pollution compared to their smaller counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a table of road tax rates for vehicles up to 1600cc;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-1922\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-1922\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Engine Capacity<\/th><th class=\"column-2\">Rate<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">1000cc and below<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">RM20.00<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">1001cc to 1200cc<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">RM55.00<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">1201cc to 1400cc<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">RM70.00<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-5\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">1401cc to 1600cc<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">RM90.00<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-1922 from cache -->\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For vehicles with engine capacity higher than 1600cc, a progressive rate kicks in after an initial base rate has been applied. But instead of using CCs to determine the rates, EVs will be judged on their battery capacity, which is measured in kWH.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like CCs however, the higher the kWH, the higher the rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, right now EV users can relax for a bit, as right now EVs are enjoying a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2023\/11\/06\/new-ev-road-tax-rate-only-after-exemption-period-ends-says-loke#:~:text=%22In%202022%2C%20the%20Finance%20Ministry,for%20a%20more%20affordable%20tax.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tax exemption period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will end in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Location<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take two cars of the same model and engine capacity, and place one in Peninsula Malaysia and the other in Sabah or Sarawak, you\u2019ll find that the road tax is cheaper for the car in Sabah and Sarawak compared to the one in Peninsula Malaysia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is this? Because location is another factor that can affect rates. The reason behind this is for places where the infrastructure can be a little lacking, and the roads are not in the best condition, the road tax rate will be lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a 1001 to 1200cc vehicle\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpj.gov.my\/en\/web\/main-site\/kenderaan1-en\/-\/knowledge_base\/vehicle\/lkm-rates-calculation-guidelines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">road tax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will cost RM55.00 in Peninsula Malaysia, but only RM44.00 in Sabah.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Vehicle type<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another factor that affects the rates of your road tax is the vehicle type.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, different rates obviously apply to a motorcycle compared to a car, but did you know that there are differences in rates depending on the type of cars as well?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two types of cars in this context are saloon or non-saloon. Saloon cars include car types such as sedans, hatchbacks, coupes, and wagons, while non-saloon vehicles refers to vehicles like MPVs, SUVs, pickup trucks, and commercial vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a comparison of the rates of the two vehicle types;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Road tax rate for saloon cars<\/b><\/h4>\n\n<table style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, the ownership type of a vehicle can also affect its road tax rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any vehicle registered under a company is treated as a commercial vehicle rather than a private vehicle, and will be charged more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an above, a Perodua MyVi 1.5 falls in the 1500cc category, which means that their road tax rate will be RM90.00.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For vehicles below 1600cc, the calculation is fairly straightforward because all you need to do is refer to the correct table<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when a vehicle exceeds the 1600cc limit, the calculation gets a little bit more complicated, as a progressive rate kicks in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s have a look at an example of this.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Toyota Vellfire 2.5<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a Toyota Vellfire 2.5, the engine capacity is 2487cc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does the JPJ rate calculation table tell you about vehicles above 1600cc? That\u2019s how you calculate your road tax. This is something you should always keep in mind when buying a new car, especially if you\u2019re on a budget.
