Well did you know that nowadays, leaving a review on your former employer is something that a lot of people do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to a website called Glassdoor, the former employees of any company can now leave a review of their time working there, letting any prospective employee know the good and the bad that might come to them during their time there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But can you really trust Glassdoor reviews? Let\u2019s find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-is-Glassdoor\"><\/span><b>What is Glassdoor?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glassdoor was first established in 2007, as a company ratings website. It compiles company reviews and real salaries anonymously to help prospective employees get a feel of the company that they are considering joining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The founders of the website got the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/04\/14\/technology\/the-art-of-something-from-nothing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> idea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when one of them told a story of leaving an employee review form for a company he worked for on the printer, and what would happen if the results were revealed to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How-do-Glassdoor-reviews-work-and-can-you-trust-them\"><\/span>How do Glassdoor reviews work and can you trust them?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So now that we understand what Glassdoor is, now let\u2019s get to the meat of the question. Are Glassdoor reviews trustworthy, and should you take it into consideration when choosing your next employer?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer is, no. You should not assume the information provided is accurate. Why? Here are a few reasons why you should not take Glassdoor reviews as 100% accurate.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>No verification process for reviews<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a company review website, one thing that should be considered important is the verification process for the reviews posted on the website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, we went to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.glassdoor.com\/s\/article\/Does-Glassdoor-verify-employees?language=en_US\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glassdoor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> themselves to see what they say about their verification process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the terms and conditions, the company says that, \u201cconsidering the reality of our digital age, however, we&#8217;re unable to fully confirm our users&#8217; identities, the truthfulness of their contributions, or their employment status.\u201d This means that Glasdoor themselves admit that they can\u2019t verify the truthfulness of their reviews.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is the general consensus online as well. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/ask\/answers\/060116\/how-reliable-are-glassdoor-salaries.asp#:~:text=Information%20entered%20into%20Glassdoor.com,some%20of%20it%20is%20not.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to several articles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Glassdoor actually has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asktheheadhunter.com\/7453\/can-i-trust-glassdoor-reviews\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no real way<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/commentary\/job-reviews-glassdoor-linkedin-how-reliable-2085556\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legitimately verifying reviews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The only thing they can do is run the review through their content moderation team, and if it seems real, they will allow it to be posted on their site.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>Reviews can be super outdated<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way Glassdoor works, they encourage their users to post reviews on their former employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Glassdoor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.glassdoor.com\/s\/article\/Give-to-get-policy?language=en_US\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requires its users to post a review every 12 months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in order to navigate the website and view any company reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This creates a situation where users will post a review on a former employee, no matter how much time has passed since the user last worked with the former employee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combined with the fact that Glassdoor doesn&#8217;t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.glassdoor.com\/s\/article\/Are-older-reviews-ever-removed-due-to-age?language=en_US\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remove older reviews,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this can create an unsavory situation, where a company is judged for how it was in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now this is not ideal, because let\u2019s say a user posted a negative review for a company that they worked with five years ago, you might think that the company still has those issues, even though a lot can change in five years.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>People tend to post more negative reviews<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalstrategic.com\/why-would-they-write-that-the-psychology-of-customer-reviews\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people tend to write negative reviews more than positive reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/customerwise.co.uk\/customer-service-some-shocking-stats-and-core-truths\/#:~:text=A%20dissatisfied%20customer%20will%20tell,6%20people%20about%20their%20experience.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the White House Office of Consumer Affairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said this about negative reviews;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA dissatisfied customer will tell between 9-15 people about their experience. Around 13% of dissatisfied customers tell more than 20 people. Happy customers who get their issue resolved tell about 4-6 people about their experience,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judging from this, it\u2019s safe to say that when you\u2019re going through the Glassdoor reviews for a particular company, you\u2019ll see a lot more negative reviews than positive reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which means that even a bulk of negative reviews might not mean that a company is a horrible place to work at.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>An \u2018alleged\u2019 history of manipulated reviews<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research from a blogger named <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pragmaticengineer.com\/layoffs-push-down-scores-on-glassdoor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gergely Orosz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stated that after layoffs or a slew of negative reviews, companies tend to set their HR department to correct said reviews, and improve their company\u2019s ratings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is done by flagging negative reviews on Glassdoor, and asking current employees to write glowing, positive reviews to improve their ratings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, our research on Glassdoor also led us to a number of websites that offer \u201cnegative reviews removal service\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Websites like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/removify.com\/content-removal\/glassdoor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/affordablereputationmanagement.com\/delete-glassdoor-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one right here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers services to delete negative reviews on Glassdoor for any company that pays them, so that the company will look more appealing to prospective employees.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>The ratio of reviews to employees are very skewed<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, another reason why it can be very hard for anyone to trust Glassdoor reviews is that there is a massive imbalance in the ratio of reviews to employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there might be 10 negative reviews for a company, the company might have more than 200 employees. Which means that there is a possibility that the negative reviews are just from the loud minority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, let\u2019s have a look at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/Overview\/Working-at-Petronas-EI_IE8270.11,19.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petronas\u2019 Glassdoor page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From the reviews page, you can see that there are around 3600 reviews for the company, and 25% of it rates Petronas under three stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you look closely at Petronas\u2019 page, you will see that they have more than 10,000 employees, which means that the reviews might not paint the true picture of working at the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-is-Glassdoor-good-for\"><\/span><b>What is Glassdoor good for?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judging from everything that\u2019s been listed above, you might be forgiven for thinking that the information on Glassdoor is more fiction than fact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that is a bit unfair on Glassdoor. So in this section of the article, let\u2019s look at what Glasdoor is good for, and how you should be using it.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>1) It can be a good mirror of what is going on in a company<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although we\u2019ve already covered how Glassdoor reviews can be manipulated to make a company look good or otherwise, Glassdoor can still act as a window that allows you an inside look of a company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for a common issue in the reviews, and don\u2019t forget to bring that up during the interview session, so you can hear how the company addresses it. If the company straight up dismisses it or ignores the question, then you can take that as a massive red flag.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>2) Helps provide key insights and information of a company<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than just reviews from past employees, Glassdoor also provides prospective employees with key insights and information about the company from other aspects, such as the company culture, average salary for each role, and what to expect from the job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Crowdsourced career information can provide a snapshot of what is happening on the ground as its views provided by the employees.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So with this resource, job seekers can be equipped with more information than ever before, even before stepping one foot into the company\u2019s buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How-to-use-Glassdoor\"><\/span><b>How to use Glassdoor<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, we get to the part of how you can utilise the Glassdoor platform effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be honest, it\u2019s pretty simple and straightforward. All you have to do is collate all the necessary information and any issues that stand out and use it to have a meaningful session with the company when you go for the interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the age where information reigns supreme, Glassdoor does a good job of ensuring that no candidates go into their employment interviews without the necessary information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now all you have to do is just use the information that is given to make an informed decision on whether a company is good for you or not.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you use Glassdoor reviews before deciding whether to accept a job offer?
