{"id":59592,"date":"2023-11-02T12:01:16","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T04:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/?p=59592"},"modified":"2023-11-02T12:03:25","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T04:03:25","slug":"grab-kealn-fn-mranti-reverse-vending-machines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/grab-kealn-fn-mranti-reverse-vending-machines","title":{"rendered":"These AI Recycling Machines Will Turn Your Plastic Containers Into Grab Vouchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Grab Malaysia has launched 18 AI-driven Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) in specific strategic locations across the Klang Valley.<\/p>\n<p>This is in partnership with industry leaders KLEAN, Fraser &amp; Neave Holdings Bhd (F&amp;N) and Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Recycle-and-redeem-vouchers\"><\/span>Recycle and redeem vouchers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This collaboration is part of an experimental Grab project that seeks to drive sustainable change. It aims to encourage recycling among Grab&#8217;s customers and support Grab\u2019s commitment to achieve zero packaging waste in nature by 2040.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe recognise that food packaging waste is an inherent by-product of our food delivery platform. Change has to happen throughout the value chain, and we are committed to proactively seeking and developing sustainable, inclusive answers,\u201d said Adelene Foo, Managing Director, Grab Malaysia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom a consumer standpoint, contributing is simple: deposit rinsed plastic food containers, scan the RVMs&#8217; QR code, and redeem vouchers using collected KLEAN points,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn line with the Malaysia Plastics Sustainability Roadmap 2021-2030, we\u2019re committed to promoting alternatives and sustainable substances in plastic production. The RVMs introduced through this collaborative effort not only aligns with our roadmap\u2019s goal but also provides an avenue for both businesses and consumers to realise the desired change,\u201d said Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Encourage-greater-recycling-of-plastic-waste\"><\/span>Encourage greater recycling of plastic waste<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pilot project of Grab\u2019s is set to run for about six months. Each of the 18 RVMs will be ready and waiting to accept plastic food containers. This is in addition to aluminium cans and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)\u00a0 bottles that are more commonly collected for recycling. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deposited items will be collected by Asasrama Sdn Bhd, a certified processor<\/span>. The company recycles them into raw materials such as new PP and PET pallets\/flakes. This gives\u00a0 them a second-life by turning them into new products including apparels, furniture fillings and plastic furniture\/boxes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith rising popularity of food and grocery deliveries, it is essential that we find ways to enable greater recycling of plastic waste. The RVMs borne through this partnership will be able to accept rinsed plastic food containers and turn them into reusable materials,\u201d said Joey Azman, Co-Founder of KLEAN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe partnership with GRAB Malaysia, KLEAN and MRANTI is an opportune time for us as part of our strategy to continue working closely with partners in the public and private sector on environmental initiatives,\u201d said Karen Tan, F&amp;N\u2019s Director of Communications, Corporate Affairs &amp; Sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith AI being the backbone for the operation of each RVM,\u00a0 it is important that we cultivate partnerships that contribute towards building a thriving community,\u201d elaborated Datuk Wira Dr. Rais Hussin,\u00a0 MRANTI\u2019s Chief Executive Officer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Zero-Packaging-Waste-to-Nature-by-2040\"><\/span>Zero Packaging Waste to Nature by 2040<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grab\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RWAXlxeknjg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collaboration with KLEAN, F&amp;N and MRANTI<\/a> is part of Grab\u2019s 4-lever approach. The aim is to achieve Zero Packaging Waste to Nature by 2040. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilot project can be viewed as an extension of efforts that began in 2019 to reduce single-use plastics.\u00a0 That started by offering consumers the option to exclude single-use cutlery from their food delivery orders. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, Grab has saved more than 23,800 tonnes of waste.
