Here\u2019s What You Can Do With Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=6336019566435606&amp;set=a.423817020989253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went viral after showing the state of a grandmother\u2019s savings that was eaten by termites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the post, Khairul Azhar said that the money was carefully and meticulously accumulated by his grandmother in Kelantan as her savings to perform the Hajj. He also said that although some of it was handed over to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the rest was unsalvageable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So this raises the question, what can you do with damaged banknotes? Is it really unsalvageable or is there any way you can save your hard earned money?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that there is a way to salvage the money. The bad news however is that there are some conditions attached to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You-can-salvage-damaged-banknotes-but\"><\/span><b>You can salvage damaged banknotes, but..<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnm.gov.my\/proper-handling-of-banknotes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bank Negara&#8217;s (BNM) website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should seek to exchange your banknote if it\u2019s no longer fit for recirculation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do you know when your banknote is no longer fit for recirculating? Here are the criterias that makes a banknote fit for recirculation;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genuine and not counterfeit<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free from holes, tears, tape or missing portion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has uniform brightness and is free from excessive soiling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free from ink-wear, particularly on the portrait of SPB Yang di-Pertuan Agong<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free from defacement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if any of your banknotes do not fit all these criteria, then you should seek to exchange the money with BNM. Here are a few examples of banknotes that are no longer fit for recirculation as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnm.gov.my\/documents\/20124\/39730\/bnm_quality_std_for_malaysian_currency.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provided by BNM<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Notes that are too crumpled or have excessive shrinkage due to heat exposure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/31150611\/crumple_shrinkage_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-57436 size-full\" <strong>Notes that have tears, hole punctures and notes that are made up of composites of different notes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what if your notes are damaged? If your banknotes are damaged, you can also exchange them with BNM, but with a catch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The level of damage or defacement should be within BNM\u2019s acceptable level to be replaced with the full value of the banknote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For notes that are damaged beyond the acceptable level however, here\u2019s what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnm.gov.my\/documents\/20124\/39730\/bnm_quality_std_for_malaysian_currency.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BNM\u2019s Guidelines On Quality Standards Of Malaysian Currency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have to say about it;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Defaced Banknote<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A banknote containing words, signs, symbols, drawings and caricatures which are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">either written or inscribed on its surface deliberately.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Full value shall be awarded to any piece of banknote which has minor defacing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No value shall be awarded to any piece of banknote which is defaced in any <\/span>significant way (that is, markings done on the portrait of the Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, writings depicting political slogan and religious element or using the banknote as an invitation card\/writing pad)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Mutilated Banknote<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Value shall be given to any torn, burnt and termite infested banknotes subject to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Full value shall be awarded to any piece of banknote which is more than two-thirds <\/span>(2\/3) in size of the original banknote<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Half value shall be awarded to any piece of banknote which is more than half (1\/2) <\/span>but less than two-thirds (2\/3) in size of the original banknote<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No value shall be awarded to any piece of banknote which is less than half (1\/2) in <\/span>size of the original banknote<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Take-better-care-of-your-banknotes\"><\/span><b>Take better care of your banknotes<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So now you know that although you can exchange your damaged banknotes with BNM, it is not without any questions asked, as your damaged banknote has to fulfill a specific criteria for you to get full value replacement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which means that you should take care of your banknotes, and never keep sizable amounts of money in your house.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"block\"><div>You can easily keep your cash safely by opening a savings account.
