Of the total amount, RM7 billion remains in the Unclaimed Money Trust Account, while the remainder has been transferred to the Consolidated Revenue Account, as it was not claimed by owners or their heirs within 10 years. Crucially though, funds transferred to the Consolidated Revenue Account will still be paid out if a claim is submitted by the owner or their heirs. So it’s never too late to check.<\/p>\n
Previously, all unclaimed monies are held by the Registrar in the Consolidated Trust Account for 15 years. The proposed amendments will see the 15-year period reduced to 10 years.<\/div><\/div>\n
<\/span>But first, what is unclaimed money?<\/span><\/h2>\nUnclaimed money can refer to unpaid money that is legally payable to you, or money that has been dormant for many years. <\/span>How to check for unclaimed money online<\/span><\/h2>\nA few years ago, you\u2019d have to physically go to a Registrar of Unclaimed Money counter to check for unclaimed money and apply for a refund.<\/p>\n
But with the Electronic Government Unclaimed Money Information System (eGUMIS)<\/strong> portal, you can now do that online. When the portal first launched, you could only check for unclaimed money, but still had to make a physical or e-mail application to the Accountant General\u2019s Department.
