Financial institutions (and personal finance websites) often throw out acronyms and terms that are hard to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Worry no more, here are common terms you\u2019ll run into \u2013 and what they actually mean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39691\" src=\"https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/interest.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/interest.png 449w, \/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/interest-300x100.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"block block--success\"><div><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Simple interest<\/strong> is calculated on the principal (or original) amount of the loan or deposit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compound interest<\/strong> is calculated based on the principal amount of the loan\/deposit plus any interest previously earned or charged during your tenure. For example, if you earned interest in Month 1, the interest you will earn in Month 2 is calculated based on the sum of the principal amount plus interest earned in Month 1. In other words, you are getting interest on interest. This is great if you\u2019re earning interest, but not so great if you\u2019re paying it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39690\" src=\"https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/how-are-interest-rates-set.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/how-are-interest-rates-set.png 431w, \/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/how-are-interest-rates-set-300x83.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ever wonder how banks set your interest rates when you take out a loan or when you place a deposit?<\/p>\n<div class=\"block block--info\"><div><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your interest rates are dependent on a <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/all-about-that-base-how-does-base-rate-work\">Base Rate<\/a><\/u> (BR) which is influenced by the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR).<\/li>\n<li>The OPR is a rate set by Bank Negara Malaysia \u2013 banks refer to this rate when borrowing funds from each other. Yes, banks may borrow funds from each other from time to time in order to balance any surplus or shortage of funds for the day due to loans, withdrawals, and deposits made by customers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39693\" src=\"https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSR.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSR.png 434w, \/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSR-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><div class=\"block block--tips\"><div><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you apply for a loan, banks use the debt service ratio (DSR) to see if you can handle your loan commitments. The DSR is a ratio of your income versus debts such as credit card bills, car loans, personal loans, etc. This ratio is to determine your repayment ability.<\/li>\n<li>If your DSR is too high, your bank may either offer you a lower maximum loan amount, or not lend to you at all. It never feels good to get rejected, but this is actually doing you a favour by helping you avoid piling on too much debt.<\/li>\n<li>Banks will generally not lend you money if your DSR is at 60% to 70%. This means that if you are earning RM5,000 a month, you\u2019ll have trouble getting a loan if you already have debt commitments of RM3,000 to RM3,500 a month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39692\" src=\"https:\/\/static.imoney.my\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/credit-score.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/credit-score.png 428w, \/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/credit-score-300x83.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><div class=\"block block--success\"><div><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did you know that every time you take out a loan, rack up a credit card balance, and make (or miss) a payment, they are recorded somewhere? It\u2019s stored in a database called Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS). Credit reporting agencies like RAM Credit Information Sdn Bhd (RAMCI), CTOS, and the Credit Bureau Malaysia can access this information and come up with your <strong>credit score<\/strong>.
