Right?<\/p>\n<p>Or do they really?<\/p>\n<p>I recently came across this idea after reading one of those long, in-depth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collaborativefund.com\/blog\/the-psychology-of-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">articles<\/a> that makes you question everything you believe in.<\/p>\n<p>And after some soul-searching, I\u2019ve come to the conclusion that most people don\u2019t actually wanna be rich. However, they have this inaccurate picture of what they think being rich is. And it\u2019s this unrealistic dream that they\u2019re really chasing.<\/p>\n<p>Well like always, I\u2019m here to pop the bubble. Your idea of being rich is probably wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1-Are-You-Rich-Heres-What-The-Numbers-Say\"><\/span>1. Are You Rich? Here\u2019s What The Numbers Say<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019re (supposedly) rational people, so the easiest way to measure if you\u2019re rich or not is to look at the cold, hard numbers.<\/p>\n<p>And based on Malaysian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/middle-class-malaysia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">benchmarks<\/a>, here\u2019s how much your household (e.g. you + your spouse) needs to earn to be in either the Bottom 40% (B40), Medium 40% (M40), or Top 20% (T20):<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia Benchmarks (earnings for households)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>B40: below RM 3,860 \/ month<\/li>\n<li>M40: between RM 3,860 to RM 8,319 \/ month<\/li>\n<li>T20: above RM 8,319 \/ month<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/malaysias-rich-drive-demand-for-high-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Top 1%<\/a>: around RM 25,000 \/ month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For reference, I\u2019m also going include benchmarks for the USA.<\/p>\n<p>USA Benchmarks (earnings for households)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Top 20%: above USD 9,333 \/ month<\/li>\n<li>Top 1%: above USD 35,833 \/ month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s no official rule that the top 20% of earners are classified as \u201crich\u201d and the top 1% are \u201csuper rich.\u201d But it sounds like a logical conclusion to make.<\/p>\n<p>(BTW here\u2019s a really fun calculator to estimate how rich you are compared to the rest of the world. Try it \u2014 you\u2019ll feel much better about yourself, I promise.)<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-Wait-A-Minute%E2%80%A6-How-Much-You-Earn-Doesnt-Equal-How-Rich-You-Are-Right\"><\/span>2. Wait A Minute\u2026 How Much You Earn Doesn\u2019t Equal How Rich You Are, Right?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Thanks for catching that one. Damn right!<\/p>\n<p>Because it doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re in the 1%, but spend more money than you earn. It\u2019s still very possible to go bankrupt while earning a lot of money. Don\u2019t believe me? Check out this list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.my\/rich-famous-celebrities-who-lost-all-their-money-2018-5\/?r=US&amp;IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">broke celebrities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s actually a better calculation for measuring how rich you are, and it\u2019s called \u201cnet worth.\u201d Simply put:<\/p>\n<p>Net Worth = Assets \u2013 Liabilities<\/p>\n<p>Take the value of everything you own (e.g. bank account, fixed deposits, house, unit trusts, stocks), minus off everything you owe (e.g. home loan, car loan, credit cards), and you\u2019ll get a final figure of how much you\u2019re worth \u2014 financially. How\u2019d you do?<\/p>\n<p>p.s. Just like how having high salary doesn\u2019t mean you have high net worth, the opposite is also true. You could have a very small salary, but still be worth a lot *cough cough* family inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>The general global benchmark of a High Net Worth Individual (HNWI) is having more than USD 1 million in liquid assets.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to home, the Securities Commission of Malaysia defines someone (+their spouse) having &gt;RM 3 million in net assets (excluding their home) as a HNWI.<\/p>\n<p>BTW if you\u2019re wondering what kind of wealth you need to live like the crazies in the movie Crazy Rich Asians, I\u2019m putting them firmly in the \u201cUltra High Net Worth\u201d category \u2014 &gt;USD 30 million in net worth. But of course, you kinda already knew that Nick Young\u2018s a billionaire.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-Getting-Rich-Is-Not-Glamorous\"><\/span>3. Getting Rich Is Not Glamorous<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve made it here, you might be starting to get bored with all the financial calculations. Wasn\u2019t being rich about living a fabulously Instagrammable life? What\u2019s with all the calculations Aaron!?<\/p>\n<p>This is the part where I try to pop the bubble.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know where you got your idea of \u201crich\u201d from, but I got it from TV, and I got it from envy. TV was watching \u201cLifestyles of the Rich and Famous\u201d and \u201cBenson &amp; Hedges Golden Dreams\u201d as I was growing up, plus all the other lifestyle advertisements that came along.<\/p>\n<p>Envy was visiting rich friends\u2019 homes, seeing their cool toys and clothes, and getting fascinated by stories of their luxurious vacations. And I, like any other ambitious, middle-class person wanted to be rich too. Dreaming of all the cool things I\u2019d be able to do with all that money\u2026 fast cars, big houses, hot bitc\u2026 (bitcoins I mean).<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019m a little older and wiser now. And I can safely say that getting rich and staying rich are very different from what\u2019s portrayed in the movies and dodgy Facebook \u201cinfluencers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, getting (and staying) rich is actually kinda boring. It involves a lot of hard work, discipline, and you guessed it\u2026 calculations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut why do they keep showing me pictures of hot, stylish people having exotic vacations then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, otherwise how would they get your attention? And how would they sell their products to you?<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve been fed a lie. And it\u2019s a lie so good, most of us just accept it without ever questioning.<\/p>\n<p>The lie is that being rich is about spending money.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-Living-%E2%80%9CRich%E2%80%9D-Ironically-Makes-You-Poorer\"><\/span>4. Living \u201cRich\u201d Ironically Makes You Poorer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you think about it properly, the things that make people rich (or make rich people richer) are actually hidden stuff. For example, here\u2019s a list of things that can either generate cash, or increase in value. If you\u2019re an accountant, you\u2019d call it a \u201ccash flow generating asset\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fixed deposits<\/li>\n<li>Rental properties<\/li>\n<li>Unit trusts (mutual funds)<\/li>\n<li>Stocks<\/li>\n<li>Businesses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the other hand, think about all the things that society \u201ctrains\u201d us to gauge whether a person is rich or not. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Luxury cars<\/li>\n<li>Exotic vacations<\/li>\n<li>Branded clothes<\/li>\n<li>Shiny jewelry<\/li>\n<li>Latest gadgets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But none of these things actually makes you money. And not only do they not make you money, most of these lose value (accountants would call it \u201cdepreciation\u201d) immediately after you buy them \u2014 and keep on losing value.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, you\u2019ll be very popular with gold diggers and toy boys. The Jho Low way of living. In terms of wealth though, you\u2019d actually be losing money.<\/p>\n<p>(Of course, you could use all the above to be a shameless lifestyle marketer and make money: \u201cLook at me, I have all these nice things and such a cool life \u2014 join my network and you can too!\u201d But would you sleep well at night?)<\/p>\n<p>Look at List 1 vs List 2 again. Most people don\u2019t proudly display how much they\u2019ve invested into AirAsia stocks. Or the amount of Bitcoin they have. Or certificates showing how much land they own. It\u2019s weird, distasteful, and only awkward finance geeks would get excited about it.<\/p>\n<p>But those are the things that actually make you richer.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-%E2%80%9CIm-Sick-Of-All-You-Gurus-Who-Keep-Asking-People-To-Stop-Spending-Money-Wheres-The-Fun-In-Life-Then%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>5. \u201cI\u2019m Sick Of All You Gurus Who Keep Asking People To Stop Spending Money. Where\u2019s The Fun In Life Then?\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is where we talk about balance.<\/p>\n<p>Despite my pen name, I\u2019m never gonna be the \u201cfrugality guru\u201d who asks you to stop spending money on everything (and lose all your friends). That\u2019s just not my style. In fact, I\u2019d rather you figure out what\u2019s important to you, forget everything else and dump all your money into that. Or as one of my favorite authors says:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpend extravagantly on things you love, and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0\u2013 Ramit Sethi \u2013<\/p>\n<p>What I am saying, is that mathematically, the path to riches doesn\u2019t involve lots of luxurious spending. In fact, if you look carefully, you\u2019ll find the average millionaire is surprisingly frugal.<\/p>\n<p>Probably more frugal than your average middle-class person. As Robert Kiyosaki once wrote, \u201cThe rich buy assets. The poor only have expenses. The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Key Point: If you wanna be rich, buy more assets. Because being rich is not about showing off \u2014 it\u2019s about owning more assets.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2013 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>As they say, knowledge is power. Or rather, knowledge gives us power to think and act.<\/p>\n<p>What are the important things in life that we should keep spending money on? And what are the less-important things we think we need, but actually make us poorer \u2014 in terms of money and quality of life?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I\u2019ll cover this further in my next article. But until then, I hope you\u2019ll take some time to think about what being rich really means.
