Thanks to a strategic partnership between Hong Leong Bank and Tencent’s WeChat wallet, consumers can now use WeChat pay as an alternative payment option. WeChat has over 20 million users in Malaysia, who now have the option to go cashless with this new merger.<\/p>\n
Consumers\u00a0can link their debit cards to their WeChat e-wallets, and then use the app to pay for goods and services instead.<\/p>\n
Hong Leong bank is the first bank in Malaysia to seal this partnership. Prior to this, WeChat has only engaged with banks from China and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
According to Hong Leong Bank’s Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Domenic Fuda, this partnership enables both merchants and consumers to make transactions using the Malaysian ringgit.<\/p>\n
\u201cHLB is the first bank in Malaysia to be approved as Tencent\u2019s local WeChat Pay master merchant acquirer and being the first country, outside of China and Hong Kong, to be able to make payments in the local currency,\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are not only looking to expand the payment ecosystem to our Malaysian merchants, but also to cater to the Chinese tourist market,”<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will enable our customers and WeChat users in Malaysia to use this payment option, with a large number of merchants already signing up for WeChat Pay,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Customers can already use their WeChat wallet across all WeChat platforms, Garena, Joox, and for prepaid top-ups on their mobile phones. Hong Leong Bank is also planning to extend the service to other crowd favourite places like GSC, Genting, MyNews and more.<\/p>\n
