You’re the hero in your life story, and I’m the hero in mine.<\/p>\n

But as in all great stories — we’re not alone. Evil\u00a0enemies lurk in our lives, fighting\u00a0to prevent us from our dreams. They want to\u00a0rob\u00a0our money, ruin our careers, and destroy our relationships.<\/p>\n

Hopefully we get to work together — because our enemies are strong. But sometimes, we’re weak. Sometimes, we need help.<\/p>\n

Here are five of my\u00a0greatest enemies to\u00a0wealth. When I lose to them, they have no mercy — they take away all my money.\u00a0Have you fought them before too?<\/p>\n

<\/span>1. Ego<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Last week,\u00a0I walked into a store and ended up spending almost 50% more than my planned budget.<\/p>\n

Why? Because I was too proud\u00a0to tell the smooth-talking\u00a0attendant I was on a limited budget. I don’t know who I was trying to impress\u00a0— she wasn’t even my type of hot —\u00a0but I couldn’t get past my ego. I couldn’t bring myself to say “This is all I can afford — do you have something cheaper?”<\/p>\n

Maybe I was trying to impress myself.<\/p>\n

Every time that happens — I become a little poorer. Ego clouds my judgement and I make stupid decisions.<\/p>\n

Pride comes before a fall.<\/p>\n

<\/span>2. Jealousy<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

While ego is\u00a0a personal battle, jealousy takes things one step further. Now instead of just being proud, I’m proud, comparing myself to other people — and wanting to be greater than them.<\/p>\n

And it makes me do all sorts of crazy things. For example, buying a luxury condo\u00a0to “win”\u00a0my friends — even though I actually can’t afford\u00a0the loan payments and the maintenance fees.<\/p>\n

The worst\u00a0thing is jealousy is never satisfied. Think you’ll make him shut up\u00a0once your house is bigger than your friends? Wait till you meet someone with an even bigger house…<\/p>\n

Some might\u00a0say that jealousy isn’t all\u00a0bad — that it can actually encourage you\u00a0to make more money and become more successful.<\/p>\n

Sorry, but I’m not buying that. I’ve never seen anything good come from jealousy.<\/p>\n

If someone wants to improve themselves, get promoted, and make more money\u00a0— that’s great. But the motivation shouldn’t be from\u00a0comparing themselves to other people, and lusting after what they have.<\/p>\n

That only ever leads to heartbreak.<\/p>\n

<\/span>3. Peer pressure<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.<\/p>\n

If all your close friends love luxury cars\u00a0— you’re more likely to\u00a0think that BMWs are value for money. If all your girlfriends\u00a0are in credit card debt, you’re more likely to think it’s normal to pay interest every month — as long as you have that latest handbag!<\/p>\n

Likewise, if your inner circle\u00a0is full of negative people who bitch about how “life is unfair” and “it’s XXX’s fault that I’m poor” — it’ll be hard for you to\u00a0take responsibility over your own life and finances.<\/p>\n

I can’t tell you who you should spend time with. But if you think about it properly, you\u00a0can tell\u00a0which people in your life are good and\u00a0bad for you. And your money.<\/p>\n

It might be painful, but it may be time to remove\u00a0bad influences from your life?<\/p>\n

<\/span>4.\u00a0Indiscipline<\/span><\/h2>\n

Sometimes, it’s not that we don’t know what to do. It’s that\u00a0we’re too weak to do it.<\/p>\n

I use the term “weak” loosely here. It could mean a combination of laziness, lack of motivation,\u00a0and procrastination.<\/p>\n

Like how I’m supposed to pay my credit card bills on time, but I delay it because I’m busy having drinks with my friends. Or when I’m supposed to be reading about\u00a0LLP\u00a0taxation, but end up streaming\u00a0Selena Gomez’s latest videos.<\/p>\n

The only way I know to build discipline is this: Acknowledge\u00a0the pain; feel it;\u00a0then do the right thing anyway. Take the first small step and follow through. And understand it takes time.<\/p>\n

I was once a broke fresh graduate, feeling that I didn’t have enough money. It took me six long years of doing the boring, painful, right things (e.g. working hard,\u00a0budgeting<\/a>, saving>10% of salary) before I finally started feeling\u00a0comfortable financially.<\/p>\n

And sometimes I still feel like I don’t have\u00a0enough money<\/a>…<\/p>\n

<\/span>5. Ignorance<\/span><\/h2>\n

The most dangerous enemy of all\u00a0is ignorance. And its ugly cousin — apathy.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know and I don’t care.”<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Because you can’t improve your situation if you don’t have the knowledge. Even worse, if you’re really clueless — you might not even know if you’re in\u00a0deep trouble.<\/p>\n

I was once shamelessly ignorant\u00a0too: When I first started working\u00a0in 2007, I felt that everything was great. I had a job in a big company; and I had money to blow every month. Yay! I\u00a0was so good\u00a0at blowing money that I didn’t have any savings.<\/p>\n

Until I stumbled upon\u00a0the concept of\u00a0net worth<\/a>\u00a0while reading online. So I did the calculation: total assets\u00a0minus<\/em>\u00a0total liabilities. And that’s when I realised\u00a0it — I was broke.<\/p>\n

The scary thing\u00a0was that nobody had asked me to learn about this finance stuff. Not my parents, not my bosses, and not my friends. I just did it out of personal interest. Maybe if I hadn’t stumbled upon that article, I’d still be broke today.<\/p>\n

But once I was aware of my situation — I could start doing things to improve.<\/p>\n

Which makes me wonder. For something so important, why isn’t personal finance taught in schools?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some\u00a0days\u00a0I think that I’m strong — and then someone walks past with a shiny Rolex on his wrist. I can’t help looking, and jealousy is back.<\/p>\n

Some\u00a0days\u00a0I think that I’m smart — and then I read a proper financial newspaper\u00a0and realise I don’t understand 50% of what they’re saying.<\/p>\n

Then I remember — these enemies never fully go away. The war never ends.<\/p>\n

Every day we fight again.\u00a0For our wealth and freedom. The more you win, the easier it gets. It’s momentum — like\u00a0a champion sprinter leaving the pack behind.<\/p>\n

I want us\u00a0to win; so let’s\u00a0keep doing the difficult things. Let’s\u00a0keep learning\u00a0and training; winning the small battles. Then\u00a0someday, our\u00a0enemies won’t be able to\u00a0beat\u00a0us\u00a0anymore.<\/p>\n

Someday, we’ll\u00a0be Usain Bolt.\u00a0Leaving the pack behind; smiling at the cameras.<\/p>\n
