Most people think about money in the form of goods and services. It\u2019s the good stuff you use to buy groceries, book vacations and pay your bills. Everyone\u00a0wishes they\u00a0had\u00a0more of it, but no one ever has enough.<\/p>\n

I think that\u2019s a rather simplistic view of money. And it\u2019s a view that keeps most of us stuck in the struggling middle class.<\/p>\n

What if I told you viewing money differently could change your financial destiny?<\/p>\n

Here are four better ways to look at money.<\/p>\n

<\/span>1. Money is value<\/span><\/h2>\n

We live in a strange world where\u00a0Facebook (which doesn\u2019t have any physical products) is worth more than McDonald\u2019s\u00a0\u2014 which feeds\u00a070 million customers<\/a>\u00a0a day (1% of the world\u2019s population).<\/p>\n

If you think about it intuitively \u2014 this makes no sense. How could something usually viewed as online\u00a0entertainment be more valuable than food, drink and Happy Meals?<\/p>\n

And think about how some people suddenly become millionaires when their company goes for an IPO, while the rest of us\u00a0work just as hard at our jobs \u2014 yet just scrape by every month.<\/p>\n

Seems like a terribly unfair world, right?<\/p>\n

Yes \u2014 it\u2019ll seem unfair if you think money\u00a0should be proportionate to effort.<\/p>\n

But the thing about money is it follows\u00a0value<\/strong>. Save a few exceptions (like corrupt politicians and overpaid bankers),\u00a0how much something\u00a0or\u00a0someone is valued is usually proportional to how useful<\/strong>\u00a0it is to people.\u00a0That\u2019s why Mark Z and Facebook are worth billions: more people use Facebook than eat McDonald\u2019s.<\/p>\n

So if you want a lot of money (in the most legit way), find a way\u00a0to bring lots of value to lots of people.<\/p>\n

<\/span>2. Money is leverage (not evil)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Some\u00a0people say that\u00a0money is the\u00a0root of\u00a0all evil*.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0disagree.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the kind of thinking that clouds people\u2019s judgement, makes them unprepared to handle money, and consequently keeps them struggling financially.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s learn from rich people.\u00a0Unlike middle-class earners,\u00a0millionaires\u00a0don\u2019t get emotional<\/a>\u00a0about money.\u00a0They view money differently \u2014 as a tool to be\u00a0used for their needs. As\u00a0leverage<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Ever heard the saying below?<\/p>\n

\u201cPoor people think money is to be spent; rich people think money is to be invested.\u201d<\/p>\n

Money is the easiest tool you can leverage in life to\u00a0make\u00a0it better (as opposed to other things like time, energy and influence are much harder to control). If you keep investing money in the right things, you can keep improving your life.<\/p>\n

Use it wisely.<\/p>\n

<\/span>3. Money is choice; choice can lead to happiness<\/span><\/h2>\n

I recently resigned from a pretty nice job, and said no to\u00a0a\u00a0six-figure USD counter-offer\u00a0<\/a>\u2014\u00a0because I thought I would be happier\u00a0in my new job.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not saying this to brag. I\u2019m saying this to illustrate a point.<\/p>\n

When you reach a certain point of financial stability, i.e. you know how much money you need; you have sufficient emergency savings in the bank; and your debt is manageable\u00a0\u2014 you have more control over your life.<\/p>\n

Contrast this to a situation where you\u2019re struggling to pay your rent and have huge credit card debt.\u00a0Now, you have a lot\u00a0less control and a lot more unhappiness. You\u00a0work jobs\u00a0you hate\u00a0to pay off\u00a0debt, you\u00a0have\u00a0to use crappy\u00a0public\u00a0transportation, and when your cousin comes to visit\u00a0\u2014 you struggle\u00a0to buy her a nice dinner.<\/p>\n

The more money you have, the more choices you have in life.<\/p>\n

Of course, many people use money to make poor choices and end up badly too.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0if you make the\u00a0right choices\u00a0\u2014 you get to become happier.<\/p>\n

<\/span>4. Money is Freedom<\/span><\/h2>\n

A lot of people say they want to be rich.<\/p>\n

But what I think everyone really wants is to be free.<\/p>\n

Because if you go\u00a0beyond the banal\u00a0things most people have on their If-I-Were-Rich lists\u00a0(e.g.\u00a0big house, nice car, and exotic vacations) \u2014 somewhere high on the list are more\u00a0important things like time with my family,\u00a0meaningful work, and good health.<\/p>\n

Yet, people often\u00a0trade exactly those important things for the less-important ones. Like the rich businessman who buys a mansion \u2014 yet works so hard he hardly sees his children. Or the high-powered lawyer who parties with rich clients every night\u00a0\u2014 yet\u00a0has major health problems by the time\u00a0he\u2019s 30.<\/p>\n

Material comforts are nice to have. But material things should not\u00a0be the end goal.<\/p>\n

Instead, I think\u00a0freedom<\/em>\u00a0needs to be the end goal. Freedom from meaningless work. Freedom from debt\u00a0and\u00a0disease. And freedom from toxic people,\u00a0separation, and loneliness.<\/p>\n

If you position your desires\u00a0properly\u00a0\u2014 money could help\u00a0free you from all the above.\u00a0But first, you\u00a0need to figure out your end goal.<\/p>\n

* * * * * * * *<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not easy to think of money as anything other than currency to buy\u00a0things. I totally understand. When I used to be broke, I thought exactly the same way too.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0somehow along the path\u00a0to financial security, I realised how we view money is just as important as what we do with it. Have poor views about money \u2014 and you\u2019ll never be\u00a0in control of your finances.<\/p>\n

But if you want to\u00a0own<\/strong>\u00a0money \u2014 bring value to people. When you have\u00a0money, leverage and control it to keep improving your life\u00a0\u2014 not spend it on meaningless things.<\/p>\n

And ultimately, remember that money itself is not the end goal. It\u2019s just another stepping stone on the path to freedom.<\/p>\n
