Tony Hsieh is the CEO of Zappos, one of the largest online shoe stores in the world. He is as famous for being frugal (he lives in a trailer park, despite being worth about US$820 million), as he is for his radical management philosophies. I won’t go into detail here \u2013 but he’s basically built a billion dollar company on some\u00a0unconventional\u00a0strategies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In his 2010 bestselling book, “Delivering Happiness”,\u00a0Hsieh\u00a0talks about a time in his life where he seriously dabbled into playing\u00a0poker<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and the business lessons he learned from that experience.<\/p>\n

Personally, I’ve lost every single dollar I’ve ever put into a poker game. But for a guy who’s always trying to optimise like me — poker is really fascinating. And I actually see similarities between it\u00a0and investing. Before you flame me, saying that investing and gambling are totally different — do you realise that the way many\u00a0people “invest” is just like gambling? It may not be the right way to invest, but many investors are guilty of it.<\/p>\n

This article is an extension of what Hsieh\u00a0said he learned from poker. And\u00a0what it can teach us about investing.<\/p>\n

<\/span>1. You can always switch tables<\/span><\/h2>\n

Unlike other games in the casino \u2013 poker is a game where you play against other players. It’s way more unpredictable. For example, if you’re playing\u00a0Big Small<\/em>\u00a0or Roulette — you already know what the probability is for every situation.<\/p>\n

And you know that the house (casino) always wins in the end. It’s math.<\/p>\n

But in poker — how much you win or lose depends a lot on\u00a0your<\/strong>\u00a0abilities, and the abilities of the people at your table. If you’re a great player playing against newbies, you’ll likely win their money. On the contrary, there’s a saying in poker:<\/p>\n

Look around the table. If you don\u2019t see a sucker, get up. Because you\u2019re the sucker.

The lesson here is simple: if you’re sitting at a table with much stronger opponents — you’re going to lose. In investing, this means you shouldn’t play\u00a0in areas which you’re not skilled at. Unless you’re a pro, leave that for the pros<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I’m not saying that you should always\u00a0give up whenever there’s strong opposition; or that you should expect to win all the time. And yes \u2013 to improve your skills, you need to struggle and try new things.<\/p>\n

But understand that in investing, there are\u00a0places where you have no business being in. Where\u00a0if you stay \u2013 you’re going to lose money. Get out, and get out fast.<\/p>\n

This of course applies\u00a0to\u00a0business, career and your relationships too.<\/p>\n

<\/span>2. Take care of your emotional (and physical) state<\/span><\/h2>\n
…an experienced player can make ten times as much money sitting at a table with nine mediocre players who are tired and have a lot of chips; compared with sitting at a table with nine really good players who are focused and don\u2019t have that many chips in front of them.

There’s a lot to learn from Hsieh’s\u00a0words\u00a0here. He speaks about choosing where you play, which we’ve talked about above. And he speaks about\u00a0chips<\/strong>, which represent how much money you can potentially make.<\/p>\n

But what I find most interesting is how he talks about\u00a0state<\/strong>; whether his opponents are tired or focused. And you’ll know this to be true if you’ve ever lost money gambling:<\/p>\n

Tired, emotional\u00a0people\u00a0make\u00a0bad decisions.<\/p>\n

The good news is that when you and I are making investment decisions, we have time to think about it, instead of\u00a0being under pressure.<\/p>\n

Quick tips.<\/div>
If you ever get invited\u00a0to one of those dodgy “product introductions” where you’re pressured\u00a0to buy\u00a0immediately\u00a0— don’t do it.<\/div><\/div>\n

And similar to how you should never send an email when you’re angry, or text your ex when you’re drunk — never make an investment decision when you’re emotional.<\/p>\n

It’s what leads gamblers to suicide.<\/p>\n

<\/span>3. Always be learning<\/span><\/h2>\n

When I was younger, I used to think that people can “master” things. That once they reach a certain level — they know everything about something.<\/p>\n

But you know the truth is very different. Knowledge increases, things improve and humans evolve.<\/p>\n

Twenty\u00a0years ago, you spoke to\u00a0a remisier for hot tips before\u00a0he\u00a0<\/em>made a trade for you\u00a0on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. Today, you watch Bloomberg on your smartphone and make trades yourself\u00a0via CIMB Clicks. Come to think about it, when was the last time you heard the word “remisier”?<\/p>\n

If you’re not always learning — you’ll be left behind as the world continues to change.<\/p>\n

How does one learn? Read everything you can, get advice\u00a0from\u00a0people who are smarter than you, and\u00a0try<\/strong>\u00a0things out for yourself. (Just remember Point 1 above and limit your losses).<\/p>\n

In poker, a beginner\u00a0should\u00a0study historical games and strategies\u00a0of legendary\u00a0players. Then practice\u00a0them\u00a0with\u00a0players who are better. With investing, you can start by reading the classics by Robert Kiyosaki, Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett.\u00a0Then compare their principles to\u00a0modern investment ideas you see online, while trying them out for yourself.<\/p>\n

There are always new things to learn, new things to try,\u00a0and more room for improvement. And perhaps best of all —\u00a0there’s always more money to be made.<\/p>\n

While I would never suggest anyone to start gambling, I think\u00a0that everyone can learn something from anyone<\/strong>. Maybe you\u00a0disagree with the concept of gambling;\u00a0it is after all a\u00a0haram<\/em>\u00a0activity.\u00a0But I do hope you build\u00a0the analytical skills, decision-making abilities, and emotional control\u00a0of a top poker player.<\/p>\n

Then your investments will become less and less like gambles, and\u00a0more and more like winnings.<\/p>\n
